Taliban publicly flogged four people including woman

The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that four people, including a woman, have been publicly flogged for “immorality” in Kabul’s Pagman district, Khama Press reports. Khama Press is an online news service for Afghanistan. According to a news release, the men were arrested in the Kargha area of Kabul. The convicts have been sentenced to three months in prison by Taliban officials.

The Supreme Court of the Taliban said in a press release on Wednesday that after the verdict was issued, Taliban officers publicly flogged the criminals at the Pagman district court in the presence of government officials and some civilians. The news release said that each of the convicts was sentenced to twenty lashes and one month’s imprisonment. After seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban resumed corporal punishment among civilians.

Meanwhile, human rights advocacy groups have repeatedly stated in their reports that those convicted under the Taliban do not have access to a legal and standardized judicial system in Afghanistan. Several human rights organizations have condemned the use of corporal punishment by Taliban officials. The Taliban is accused of violating human rights in many cases, especially by banning Afghan women and girls from education, work or participation in public events.
