Japan and United States agree to strengthen alliance

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio met with US President Joe Biden in Washington on Friday. The two leaders agreed to strengthen the bilateral alliance in view of China’s growing clout.

“I don’t think the relationship between the United States and Japan has ever been closed,” Biden said at the start of talks at the White House.

He also said that “The United States is absolutely, absolutely, absolutely committed to the alliance, and most of all, to the defence of Japan.”

Kishida said the security environment is more serious and complex than ever. He said that Japan has formulated a new security strategy to contribute to regional peace and prosperity.

Kishida and Biden issued a joint statement after the summit.

It mentions the activities of China and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific region and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The statement said that Biden appreciates Japan for strengthening the country’s defence capability principle.

Accordingly, the two leaders reaffirmed that the US-Japan alliance will continue to be a cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The statement reiterates the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and promotes the peaceful resolution of issues in the region.
