SYDNEY: Australia will bid \u200cto join the United Nations Security Council from 2029, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday, as he launched a campaign \u200bto secure one of the two non-permanent seats available to its bloc.<\/p>\n
Albanese said Australia, whose last two-year term on the council ended in 2014, would have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping global responses to issues that matter to Australians if elected to the Security Council.<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralia punches above our \u200cweight … and \u200cwe can have an impact on \u200bthe \u200cworld, \u2060and \u200bthat\u2019s what \u2060I want to see Australia do,\u201d Albanese told reporters in New York on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n
Albanese said he expected \u201cvery strong support\u201d from Pacific island countries and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
He added that his \u201cstrong relationships\u201d with \u2060world leaders would help Australia\u2019s bid, even as \u200ca closely watched Newspoll conducted \u200cfor The Australian newspaper and \u200breleased on Monday showed his \u200capproval rating at home had slipped to its \u200clowest level since he won its first term in 2022.<\/p>\n

The UN Security Council has 10 non-permanent members, with five elected each year. Finland is the other nominee, alongside Australia, for the 2029-30 seat from the Western European and Others Group. The Asia-Pacific, African, and Latin American and Caribbean groups will also put forward their nominees.<\/p>\n
Voting to select the non-permanent members for the 2029-2030 term is expected to take place by secret ballot in 2028.<\/p>\n
The United States, China, \u200bFrance, Russia, and the \u200bUnited Kingdom make up the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
