{"id":97247,"date":"2026-09-10T00:48:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T00:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=97247"},"modified":"2026-09-10T00:48:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T00:48:00","slug":"uk-needs-new-laws-for-ai-in-healthcare-says-watchdog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=97247","title":{"rendered":"UK needs new laws for AI in healthcare, says watchdog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The UK needs new regulations for AI products used in the NHS and other healthcare settings, says Britain&#8217;s industry watchdog.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which regulates all medical devices and licenses treatment drugs in the UK, has published 44 recommendations to update its policies as the use of AI in the sector rises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The technology will soon be routinely used within the NHS, MHRA chief Lawrence Tallon told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;What I would expect is that patients will&#8230; increasingly see AI as part of the way that normal NHS healthcare is delivered,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;That should happen in a way that they can maintain their trust and their confidence in what&#8217;s happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The report was compiled by an independent commission and involved input from more than 12,000 people including patients and clinicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The recommendations include:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-2st5ed-ListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Continuously monitoring AI products and removing them from regulatory approval if they malfunction or become less effective over time<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Giving patients the right to know whether AI is involved in their care, and easy access to information about the products involved<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The power to penalise the developers of an AI product if it fails to meet required standards<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An AI &#8220;L plate&#8221; system which would make it easier for new AI models to be trialled by healthcare professionals under close supervision<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The medical devices regulatory framework predominantly dates from a period where we were thinking about things like hip replacements and knee replacements, or smaller things like stethoscopes and plasters,&#8221; Tallon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added while current guidelines may work for simple AI products trained to spot known symptoms on scans, for example, the rules do not apply to more complex models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Unlike most of the medical products we&#8217;re used to regulating, these products continue to change after the point of authorization,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As new data gets fed in, they learn, they adapt, they drift.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And he acknowledged trying to regulate AI is a global challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think at this moment in time we can point to a single country, a single regulatory framework, and say that they have absolutely cracked it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3wjn3pl63xo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK needs new regulations for AI products used in the NHS and other healthcare settings,&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":97248,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[1885,2468,3768],"class_list":["post-97247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","tag-healthcare","tag-laws","tag-watchdog"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
