{"id":96734,"date":"2026-08-28T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=96734"},"modified":"2026-08-28T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T12:00:00","slug":"who-reports-more-than-3200-attacks-on-ukraines-healthcare-system-since-full-scale-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=96734","title":{"rendered":"WHO reports more than 3,200 attacks on Ukraine\u2019s healthcare system since full-scale invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/Embargoed\/2026\/08\/10-08-2026-WHO-Ukraine-01.jpg\/image560x340cropped.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3><strong>Key points<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Attacks on humanitarian warehouses in Ukraine have destroyed medical supplies meant for hundreds of thousands of people<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Despite the dangers, WHO and UN partners continue delivering aid to hard-to-reach areas while supporting Ukrainian healthcare workers facing severe psychological strain<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh overnight attacks killed at least 12 civilians and damaged more aid warehouses, prompting renewed UN calls for a ceasefire<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Such attacks undermine the ability of humanitarian organizations to provide support to people in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2026, 20 attacks on warehouses containing humanitarian aid have already been recorded, including 13 warehouses where medical supplies were stored,\u201d Dr, Habicht said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHO faced similar attacks in Kyiv in July and Dnipro in August, resulting in the loss of significant amounts of medicine and equipment intended to help 225,000 people,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the difficult and dangerous conditions, WHO and its partners continued to deliver humanitarian aid, provide consultations and support the Ukrainian healthcare system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Delivering in hard-to-reach areas<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So far this year, nine WHO humanitarian convoys and 22 UN inter-agency convoys, including two that departed for the Donetsk region on Friday, delivered medicines, equipment and other medical supplies to more than 50 settlements in hard-to-reach areas.<\/p>\n<p>With WHO support, primary health care teams have provided 13,130 consultations in seven regions of Ukraine over the past eight months.<\/p>\n<p>In areas where pharmacies are not operating, 28,400 people received over-the-counter drug kits this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of WHO\u2019s comprehensive humanitarian response, we supported the health system by providing equipment and supplies to more than 300 health facilities \u2013 including primary health care centres, hospitals, laboratories and transit points \u2013 enabling them to help three million people,\u201d Dr. Habicht said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Medical staff face enormous stress<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The WHO representative also said that the war is placing a heavy burden on Ukrainian medical workers.<\/p>\n<p>A recent WHO study found that more than one quarter of doctors and nurses reported symptoms consistent with depressive disorder, and one in five health workers exhibited signs of anxiety disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur task is to implement additional measures and support tools for those who help people and save lives,\u201d said Dr. Habicht.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To support the psychological wellbeing of healthcare workers, WHO has incorporated elements of psychological first aid and self-care skills into ambulance crew training programs. More than 40 specialists from 11 regions have completed the training.<\/p>\n<p>The organization also runs a programme for primary healthcare and rehabilitation professionals, with more than 700 healthcare workers taking part.<\/p>\n<p>Participants demonstrated significant improvements in psychological wellbeing and performance as well as a reduction in symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Preparing for winter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Habicht warned that Ukraine faces another difficult winter, and WHO is doing everything possible to help Ukrainians prepare for the cold season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To ensure the smooth operation of medical services, the UN health agency has already installed 30 heating systems in medical facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Another 22 are planned for installation before winter, WHO said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Part of wider pattern<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Authorities say attacks across Ukraine between yesterday and the early hours of this morning have killed at least 12 civilians and injured more than 65 others, with frontline regions were especially hard hit, UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Other UN agencies are reporting fresh attacks on its aid storage sites, including the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF), which said strikes in the Kyiv region hit one its warehouses, destroying humanitarian supplies that will hamper the delivery of vital assistance ahead of winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is part of a wider pattern, with at least six warehouses belonging to humanitarian operations impacted by attacks in Ukraine in this month,\u201d Mr. Dujarric said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reiterate, once again, the Secretary-General\u2019s condemnations of large-scale missile and drone attacks by the armed forces of the Russian Federation in urban centres in Ukraine,\u201d the UN Spokesperson said, reiterating the UN chief\u2019s call for an urgent de-escalation, leading to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2026\/08\/1168226\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Key points Attacks on humanitarian warehouses in Ukraine have destroyed medical supplies meant for hundreds of&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[370,3832,1885,3091,1031,662,1410],"class_list":["post-96734","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-europe","tag-attacks","tag-fullscale","tag-healthcare","tag-invasion","tag-reports","tag-system","tag-ukraines"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
