{"id":9647,"date":"2022-12-11T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/more-than-11000-children-killed-or-injured-in-yemen-conflict-unicef\/"},"modified":"2022-12-11T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T12:00:00","slug":"more-than-11000-children-killed-or-injured-in-yemen-conflict-unicef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=9647","title":{"rendered":"More than 11,000 children killed or injured in Yemen conflict: UNICEF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Agency chief Catherine Russell, who has completed a visit to the country, called for <strong>urgent renewal<\/strong> of the truce between the Government and Houthi rebels.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark agreement was initially announced in April and led to a significant reduction in the intensity of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>However, a further 62 children have been killed or injured in the period since it ended in early October and 30 November,\u00a0UNICEF said.<\/p>\n<h2>Struggling to survive<\/h2>\n<p>Furthermore, at least 74 children were among the 164 people killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance between July and September alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Russell visited a hospital in the city of Aden where she met Yasin, a seven-month-old boy, and his mother, Saba, for whom life has become a struggle for survival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands of children have lost their lives, hundreds of thousands more remain at risk of death from preventable disease or starvation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yasin is just<strong> one of too many severely malnourished children<\/strong> in Yemen. They all need immediate support as basic services have all but collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Young lives at risk<\/h2>\n<p>During her visit, Ms. Russell launched UNICEF\u2019s $10.3 billion Humanitarian Action for Children Appeal to provide water, sanitation, nutrition, education, health and protection services to children worldwide affected by conflict and disasters.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen remains one of the world\u2019s most pressing humanitarian situations. \u00a0More than 23.4 million people, or <strong>three-quarters of the population<\/strong>, require assistance and protection. More than half are children.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF estimated that <strong>2.2 million youngsters are acutely malnourished<\/strong>, including nearly 540,000 under-fives\u00a0 who are suffering from severe acute malnutrition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-quickedit-entity-id=\"media\/94387\" class=\"align-center context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><\/div>\n<p>Mothers bring their children to a clinic for malnutrition prevention treatment in Taiz, Yemen, that is supported by the World Food Programme (WFP).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>More than 17.8 million Yemenis lack access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, while the country&#8217;s health system has been extremely fragile for years. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only half of all health facilities are functional, leaving almost 22 million people \u2013 including around 10 million children &#8211; without adequate access to care.<\/p>\n<h2>Education under fire<\/h2>\n<p>The war has caused immunization coverage to stagnate, with 28 per cent of children under a year old missing routine vaccinations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The situation, together with lack of access to safe water, means <strong>children are at extreme risk of diseases<\/strong> such as cholera, measles and diphtheria.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen is also facing a <strong>severe education crisis<\/strong>, with tremendous long-term consequences for children, UNICEF warned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two million boys and girls currently are out of school, which could rise to six million as at least one out of four schools are destroyed or partially damaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Renew the truce<\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Russell stressed that if Yemen&#8217;s children are to have any chance of a decent future, the warring parties, as well as the international community and those with influence, must ensure they are <strong>protected and supported<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat includes children like Mansour, who I met at a UNICEF-supported rehabilitation and prosthetics centre. His leg was amputated at the knee after he was shot by a sniper. No child should suffer that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe urgent renewal of the truce would be <strong>a positive first step<\/strong> that would allow critical humanitarian access.
