The UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued an alert *on Tuesday over the rapidly expanding, multibillion-dollar criminal industry that turns job seekers into forced cybercriminals.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re seeing victims from over 80 different countries<\/strong> being trafficked into the scam centres, which are specifically playing out across Asia,\u201d said Amy Pope, IOM Director General, briefing journalists in Geneva.<\/p>\n Recruiters target people who speak good English and often hold degrees, she said, advertising what look like ordinary jobs on social media.<\/p>\n Once victims arrive, they are locked inside compounds, stripped of their passports and phones, and put under constant watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n Many are beaten or threatened and forced \u2013 through violence and debt bondage \u2013 to run scam operations targeting people worldwide. \u201cThey\u2019re often subjected to physical or mental abuse. They are often unable to leave<\/strong>,\u201d Ms. Pope said.<\/p>\n The warning signs are there for anyone willing to look, she added: \u201cWhat often presents as something that looks like an ideal job opportunity is just too good to be true.\u201d One red flag IOM has identified is travel on a tourist visa rather than a work permit \u2013 a question every applicant should ask before departure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Crucially, IOM insists that people forced to run scams from inside these compounds are trafficking victims, not criminals, and should be protected rather than prosecuted. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing many of the survivors of trafficking actually being identified as criminals, but in reality, they are the victims of this crime,\u201d Ms Pope said.<\/p>\n Though the scam centres are based in Asia, traffickers recruit globally through social media. Between 2022 and 2025, IOM assisted more than 3,500 victims of forced criminality in South-East Asia, drawn from 39 countries \u2013 most from Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Kenya and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n Rescue is only the start of recovery: survivors often return home facing trauma, stigma, debt, missing documents and fear of prosecution.<\/p>\n The scale is staggering. New UN Office on Drugs and Crime data put 2025 losses from scam offences across East and South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand at between $88.3 billion and $114.1 billion \u2013 dwarfing the resources devoted to fighting trafficking. \u201cUnless we take the issue quite seriously, we anticipate it will continue to grow,\u201d Ms Pope warned.<\/p>\n IOM is calling for greater investment in victim protection, safe return and reintegration, and wider public awareness of traffickers\u2019 tactics.<\/p>\nUN News\u2019s Dan Dickinson went on assignment two years ago to the region and produced a <\/em>hard-hitting series you can read here<\/em> on the scam farms, facilitated by the UN crime-fighting agency, UNODC<\/em><\/h5>\n
