child rights agency\u00a0UNICEF and the World Food\u00a0Programme\u00a0(WFP),\u00a0comes as\u00a0people\u00a0across the\u00a0war-torn\u00a0enclave still struggle to\u00a0restore\u00a0their livelihoods, local food\u00a0systems\u00a0and essential services.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>There is progress\u00a0on\u00a0food security in Gaza, but it is fragile and can easily be reversed<\/strong>,\u201d said Carl Skau, WFP\u00a0Acting Executive Director.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0<strong>overall humanitarian situation\u00a0remains\u00a0brutal<\/strong>: families lack water,\u00a0sanitation\u00a0and medicine.\u00a0<strong>We need sustained access,\u00a0funding\u00a0and stability<\/strong>\u00a0so people of Gaza can begin recovery.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Crisis-level hunger<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Latest analysis by the UN-backed global food security monitor IPC\u00a0reveals\u00a0that\u00a01.4 million people, 67 per cent of Gaza\u2019s population, are experiencing crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity, classified as IPC Phase 3 or above.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although this\u00a0represents\u00a0a decrease from\u00a01.6 million people, or 77 per cent of the population, at the end of last year,\u00a0<strong>some\u00a0212,000 people\u00a0remain\u00a0in\u00a0emergency conditions, or\u00a0IPC Phase 4<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of them\u00a0are living in areas near the Israeli-controlled \u201cYellow Line\u201d where access to humanitarian aid and essential services\u00a0remains\u00a0especially difficult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ceasefire and scale-up<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0improvements show how quickly conditions can change when\u00a0humanitarian\u00a0assistance\u00a0and commercial activity\u00a0are scaled up, the UN agencies said, noting that\u00a0humanitarian operations have expanded significantly since the\u00a0October 2025\u00a0ceasefire\u00a0between Israel and Hamas.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>In May alone,\u00a0food parcels reached around\u00a01.5 million people<\/strong>, multipurpose\u00a0<strong>cash\u00a0assistance\u00a0peaked at around\u00a0700,000 people, and\u00a0nutrition support reached\u00a060 per cent of children under\u00a0five<\/strong>, with access to treatment for acute malnutrition also increasing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0marks a sharp contrast with September 2025, when around\u00a0500,000 people\u00a0received some form of food\u00a0assistance\u00a0and nutrition coverage for\u00a0under-fives\u00a0was\u00a0less than one\u00a0per cent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agencies said immediate improvements in food security were\u00a0observed\u00a0after the scale-up, and the IPC analysis confirms that the trend has continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Insufficient food, access restrictions<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The situation\u00a0remains\u00a0precarious.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Food rations are still insufficient in\u00a0terms of\u00a0quantity,\u00a0quality\u00a0and dietary diversity, while commercial imports of fresh produce and proteins\u00a0are\u00a0inconsistent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although access into Gaza has improved, only\u00a0the\u00a0Kerem Shalom\/Abu Salem\u00a0border crossing in the\u00a0south\u00a0remains\u00a0open, limiting the flow of essential goods needed for\u00a0recovery\u00a0and most people\u00a0thus\u00a0remain\u00a0dependent on aid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Malnutrition alert<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The agencies said malnutrition rates have also improved,\u00a0largely\u00a0due to\u00a0the\u00a0rapid expansion of nutrition prevention\u00a0programmes\u00a0and\u00a0increased\u00a0access to treatment for severe and moderate malnutrition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0these gains depend heavily on sustained\u00a0assistance\u00a0and have\u00a0occurred\u00a0despite\u00a0continued\u00a0shortages of nutritious food, recurrent disease outbreaks, limited access to safe water and sanitation, and the near collapse of livelihoods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the coming\u00a0year\u00a0some\u00a0<strong>74,000 children are expected to require treatment for acute malnutrition\u00a0while\u00a0roughly\u00a025,000\u00a0pregnant and breastfeeding women will also need nutrition support<\/strong>, they said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, four governorates \u2013 North Gaza, Gaza, Deir Al-Balah and Khan Younis \u2013 are projected to face \u201calert\u201d levels of malnutrition, IPC Phase 2.\u00a0\u00a0Some areas near the \u201cYellow\u00a0Line\u201d remained inaccessible to analysts during the survey period, leaving insufficient data for classification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcute malnutrition has fallen, but many children are\u00a0still going\u00a0hungry, and some children may never fully recover from prolonged lack of proper nutrition,\u201d said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Local food production key<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The UN agencies\u00a0said\u00a0that although any significant recovery of livelihoods or wider economic activity has yet to begin,\u00a0early signs indicate that\u00a0local food production can resume where farmers and herders can access cropland, agricultural inputs, productive assets, veterinary support and other essential services, including energy for irrigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the livestock sector, sheep inventories have increased by 33 per cent in areas where support has been sustained.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Communities are also restarting small-scale economic activity where conditions allow.\u00a0However,\u00a0these efforts cannot expand while restrictions\u00a0remain\u00a0on what enters Gaza and while large areas of land remain inaccessible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 per cent\u00a0of\u00a0cropland is not accessible, and only\u00a0three\u00a0per cent is currently usable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Food security in Gaza cannot recover unless local food production starts again and farmers, herders, fishers and other producers can rebuild their livelihoods<\/strong>,\u201d said FAO Director-General Dongyu\u00a0Qu.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProducers need access to farmland and the sea, and to seeds, tools, livestock supplies and other agricultural inputs, as well as technical
