{"id":86186,"date":"2026-06-22T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/afghanistan-in-crisis-drought-malnutrition-and-a-worsening-humanitarian-situation\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:00:00","slug":"afghanistan-in-crisis-drought-malnutrition-and-a-worsening-humanitarian-situation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=86186","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan in crisis: Drought, malnutrition and a worsening humanitarian situation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Aid\u00a0agencies\u00a0are doing what they can to\u00a0help,\u00a0including\u00a0by\u00a0identifying\u00a0dangerously malnourished children\u00a0in\u00a0sparsely populated\u00a0\u201cghost\u00a0villages\u201d where those\u00a0who\u00a0can leave do\u00a0so,\u00a0said\u00a0Olga Cherevko\u00a0from the\u00a0UN aid coordination office, OCHA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0with\u00a0nearly\u00a022\u00a0million people\u00a0in need\u00a0across Afghanistan\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0UN\u2019s\u00a0$1.7 billion\u00a0appeal\u00a0only 14 per cent funded,\u00a0life is \u201cbecoming impossible\u201d\u00a0in remote areas,\u00a0the agency\u00a0warns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Survival strategy<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Water scarcity is\u00a0the main cause of strife\u00a0for villagers in\u00a0Bamyan\u00a0province\u00a0who struggle,\u00a0far from\u00a0Afghanistan\u2019s\u00a0major cities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular village that I went to, they told me that\u00a0<strong>around half of the population had left<\/strong>, actually, because there\u2019s simply\u00a0<strong>no water to irrigate the lands<\/strong>, and so all the crops that they were growing, they dried up,\u201d Ms. Cherevko told\u00a0<em>UN News<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cPeople who could leave, they left.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those who\u00a0have\u00a0remained\u00a0often do so because they have no choice; they cannot\u00a0afford to leave.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Cherevko shared a striking example: \u201cOne of the men that I met had nine family members. He showed me what they were having for\u00a0lunch.\u00a0\u00a0It was\u00a0essentially a\u00a0bowl of what looked like rotten potato\u00a0peelings, cooked into a soup just to survive.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3.7 million children\u00a0facing acute malnutrition in 2026<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Today, an estimated\u00a03.7 million children\u00a0in Afghanistan suffer from acute malnutrition.\u00a0Many cases go unrecognized\u00a0and in some UN-supported\u00a0clinics\u00a0\u201c<strong>children die because parents simply didn\u2019t know what was happening<\/strong>; by the time they brought the child in, it was already too late\u201d,\u00a0Ms. Cherevko explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN\u00a0is addressing\u00a0this\u00a0critical issue\u00a0by providing screening and medical support, but also\u00a0by\u00a0visiting\u00a0remote communities\u00a0and raising awareness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media figure media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption figure-caption\">\n                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 UN Women\/Sayed Habib Bidell<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Afghan women with their families arrive from Pakistan with their belongings at the Torkham crossing point (August 2025)<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Forced returnees\u2019\u00a0plight<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Agencies also provide\u00a0basic\u00a0assistance\u00a0and registration\u00a0every day\u00a0to\u00a0thousands of people\u00a0who are often forcibly returned to the country\u00a0by\u00a0its\u00a0neighbours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN refugee agency,\u00a0UNHCR, around 8,000 people returned to Afghanistan in the week to 20 June 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most of these returnees have never lived in Afghanistan and did not choose to return. Their biggest concern\u00a0is survival in a land of few\u00a0opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the buses drop them in\u00a0towns,\u00a0many have nowhere to go,\u201d\u00a0Ms. Cherevko explained. Some\u00a0attempt\u00a0to return to the countries they came from, only to be deported again. Despite this, many continue trying\u00a0to leave Afghanistan, driven by desperation and\u00a0a\u00a0lack of alternatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Alarming\u00a0situation for women and girls\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>With\u00a0Bamyan\u00a0province\u00a0fresh in her mind, Ms. Cherevko\u00a0highlighted\u00a0a recurring message from\u00a0the\u00a0Afghan women\u00a0she\u00a0visited: when opportunities for women are limited, the entire household suffers. Restrictions on education\u00a0for girls decreed by the Taliban\u00a0are\u00a0denying them\u00a0future employment. \u201cAll the women I spoke to are\u00a0<strong>deeply worried about their daughters<\/strong>, who can no longer attend school and may have no future,\u201d\u00a0the OCHA worker\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These restrictions are\u00a0affecting the work of the UN and\u00a0essential services\u00a0in turn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0shortage of female professionals, particularly doctors, has become critical, for instance.\u00a0Now, when a female doctor leaves her position, it is often\u00a0nearly impossible\u00a0to replace her. This\u00a0has\u00a0limited\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0and girls\u2019 access to life-saving healthcare\u00a0drastically, including maternal and neonatal care, as well as services for malnutrition and education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From January to April 2026,\u00a0aid\u00a0partners reached\u00a05.9 million people\u00a0in Afghanistan\u00a0with at least one form of\u00a0assistance.
