{"id":85854,"date":"2026-06-07T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/from-firefights-to-football-matches-life-on-a-un-peacekeeping-frontline\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T12:00:00","slug":"from-firefights-to-football-matches-life-on-a-un-peacekeeping-frontline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=85854","title":{"rendered":"From firefights to football matches: Life on a UN peacekeeping frontline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Senegalese soldiers of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) \u2013 known by its French acronym, MINUSCA \u2013 are immediately deployed to confront the attackers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fighting lasted several hours in extremely difficult conditions,\u201d recalls Lieutenant Colonel G\u00e9rald Aranda Assine, commander of the Senegalese contingent. \u201cIt was extremely demanding psychologically, physically, mentally and morally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blue helmets, part of a Quick Reaction Force ready to deploy at any moment, helped the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) to push back the rebels, preventing them from seizing Z\u00e9mio and allowing the elections to go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"context-un_news_large_uncropped_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media figure media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-large-uncropped-credit-caption\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption figure-caption\">\n                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 MINUSCA<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">UN Peacekeepers on patrol in the Central African Republic<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur soldiers held their positions,\u201d says Lt Col. Assine. \u201cAt the same time, they managed to protect the places where the refugees were gathered.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>From battlefield to football field<\/h2>\n<p>Working as a blue helmet involves much more than military intervention. Duties can range from providing free medical care aid to conducting patrols and holding meetings with community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>In the west of the country, where the \u201cRetour, R\u00e9clamation, R\u00e9habilitation\u201d (3R) armed group agreed to disarm in 2025, peacekeepers are rebuilding links between people divided by years of fighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ex-combatants from 3R and the official army, as well as civilians, are participating in community activities, even playing a football match together, something that would have seemed unthinkable just a few months earlier.<\/p>\n<h2>A toll on mental health<\/h2>\n<p>The stark contrast between the demands placed on peacekeepers means that a great deal of attention must be paid to their well-being and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Lt Col. Assine explains that this means regular sporting and cultural activities, and the maintenance of strong links with their families, even when they are posted in the most remote areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking at your children and then smiling, showing them that everything is okay, despite the difficult environment you\u2019re in, is extremely important,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"context-un_news_large_uncropped_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media figure media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-large-uncropped-credit-caption\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption figure-caption\">\n                  <span class=\"author\">\u00a9 MINUSCA<\/span><br \/>\n                          <span class=\"caption\">Security provided by peacekeepers in CAR allows schools to stay open<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>\u2018Now I know that I will be safe\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Meetings with the local population present a human face to the soldiers\u2019 mission.<\/p>\n<p>Lt Col. Assine spoke to a former child soldier who managed to escape from an area controlled by armed groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Quick Reaction Force is there, I know that my life will not be threatened,\u201d the boy told him. \u201cNow I know that I will be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the work of MINUSCA, schools in Z\u00e9mio have reopened and medical campaigns have resumed.
