The attack on Iran reportedly targeted military sites as well as the leadership of the Iranian regime. Explosions were heard in Israel and Gulf countries after Iran launched a wave of drones and missiles.<\/p>\n
Mr. Guterres declared that the military escalation in the region undermines international peace and security, and recalled that all Member States must \u201crespect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations,\u201d which prohibits \u201cthe threat of the use of force\u00a0against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0The UN Chief called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation and warned that a failure to do so risks a wider regional conflict\u00a0with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Risk of \u2018destruction on an unimaginable scale\u2019<\/h2>\n
Senior officials added their own responses on Saturday morning: Volker T\u00fcrk, the High Commissioner for Human Rights said that bombs and missiles are not the way to resolve differences but \u201conly result in death, destruction and human misery.\u201d Civilians, he noted, \u201cend up paying the ultimate price.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. T\u00fcrk called for all parties to return to negotiations in order to avoid a wider conflict that would mean further civilian deaths and \u201cdestruction on a potentially unimaginable scale, not just in Iran but across the Middle East region.\u201d<\/p>\n
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement that he was deeply troubled by the situation and urged leaders to \u201cchoose the challenging path of dialogue over the senseless route of destruction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Emergency Security Council meeting scheduled<\/h2>\n
