{"id":81366,"date":"2026-01-08T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/ukraine-new-strikes-disrupt-basic-services-for-millions\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T12:00:00","slug":"ukraine-new-strikes-disrupt-basic-services-for-millions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=81366","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine: New strikes disrupt basic services for millions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The attacks over the last 24 hours left civilians reportedly killed and injured in the port city of Odesa, interrupting power and water supplies there, as well as in the regions of Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale wrote in a\u00a0social media post.<\/p>\n<p>Along with basic services, the UN aid coordination office (OCHA) noted that mobile communications and public electronic transport have also been disrupted, leading the mayor of Dnipro to declare a state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has seen dozens of civilians killed or injured, infrastructure damaged and heating disrupted\u00a0in recent weeks, amid freezing temperatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>One of the largest combined attacks\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In his statement, Mr. Schmale stressed that the strikes have put the most vulnerable at risk \u2013 older people, those with health conditions and families with children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attacks on energy facilities have left an estimated two million people in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia regions with limited electricity, heating and water supply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivilians and civilian infrastructure are protected under international humanitarian law. People should be safe and protected in their homes,\u201d Mr. Schmale wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attacks in the city of\u00a0Kryvyi Rih\u00a0and Dnipro were among the largest combined attacks since the eruption of the conflict in 2022, the UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric told journalists on Thursday.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the UN doing in Ukraine?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over 20\u00a0UN programmes and agencies are currently active in Ukraine, collaborating with partners to distribute emergency assistance, winter supplies and warm blankets, provide heating points and monitor conditions in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the most high stakes contingents is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which works to help stabilize the security situation and\u00a0prevent an accident involving Ukraine\u2019s nuclear facilities, including Europe\u2019s largest nuclear power plant\u00a0 in war-torn Zaporizhzhia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) helps support Ukrainians\u2019 access to education, maternal and child health and psychosocial support, among other services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And earlier this week, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its\u00a0emergency response and early recovery plan<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to help rural families, including small-scale farmers, build up sustainable food production and support Ukraine\u2019s agricultural sector overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating the entire humanitarian response is OCHA, which also provides daily updates on the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2026\/01\/1166726\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The attacks over the last 24 hours left civilians reportedly killed and injured in the port&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":81367,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[4133,8510,2134,458,656,455],"class_list":["post-81366","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe","tag-basic","tag-disrupt","tag-millions","tag-services","tag-strikes","tag-ukraine"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
