{"id":81251,"date":"2026-01-05T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/iran-protests-un-warns-against-further-bloodshed\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T12:00:00","slug":"iran-protests-un-warns-against-further-bloodshed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=81251","title":{"rendered":"Iran protests: UN warns against further bloodshed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>That\u2019s according to UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric, briefing reporters in New York on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>News reports cited videos posted online Monday showing demonstrations in Tehran and the city of Yasuj, while demonstrations took place last week in a large majority of Iranian provinces, according to human rights activists.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Deaths and injuries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rights groups also report that at least 20 have been killed \u2013 including three children &#8211; and hundreds have been arrested, including minors, amid a crackdown by security forces.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump said on Friday that his country would come to the \u201crescue\u201d of protesters if the Iranian Government continued to authorise lethal force against them. \u201cWe are locked and loaded and ready to go,\u201d he posted.<\/p>\n<p>Iran responded by writing to the UN Secretary-General and Security Council, calling on them to condemn \u201cunlawful threats\u201d towards Tehran.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Avoid any further casualties<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In response to questions during the regular Monday briefing, Mr. Dujarric said the UN chief Ant\u00f3nio Guterres underscored the need to prevent any further casualties during demonstrations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also calls on the authorities to uphold the right of freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
