On Thursday, the UN and Iraq signed a new agreement, the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2025 to 2029, to\u00a0assist\u00a0the country\u00a0in making\u00a0progress on its national goals, which are also reflected in the\u00a02030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,\u00a0the\u00a0UN\u2019s vision for the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The agreement comes ahead of the\u00a0closure of the UN\u00a0Assistance Mission\u00a0for\u00a0Iraq (UNAMI), which has been\u00a0helping\u00a0the government with key policy issues for more than two decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cSigning the Framework is a natural and\u00a0honourable\u00a0transition of the relationship between the United Nations and the Republic of Iraq,\u201d said\u00a0UNAMI chief Mohamed Al Hassan. \u201cIt reflects an orderly and responsible departure from support to political stability to the stage of consolidating sustainable development partnership between Iraq and the organization.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Listen to our interview with Mr. Al Hassan on UNAMI\u2019s closure.<\/em><\/p>\n In order to\u00a0achieve the 2030 Agenda, which also includes the 17\u00a0Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0(SDGs),\u00a0countries need not only to work collectively, but\u00a0to\u00a0also\u00a0do their part on a national level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks\u00a0are\u00a0agreements between the UN and individual governments which give countries the tools to achieve these goals, from planning to implementation and monitoring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The plan for Iraq focuses on four\u00a0main\u00a0strategic priorities that align with the country\u2019s national development plan:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The implementation,\u00a0monitoring\u00a0and reporting of the UN-Iraq development framework will be guided by a steering committee co-chaired by\u00a0Iraq\u2019s\u00a0Ministry of Planning and the UN Resident Coordinator\u00a0who leads the country team.\u00a0<\/p>\n Government institutions and UN agencies will come together to review progress annually and ensure the framework\u00a0remains\u00a0on track.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Implementation will be supported by a dedicated fund, alongside a strategy to\u00a0mobilise\u00a0resources for necessary funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n UNAMI\u00a0was created\u00a0in 2003 after the fall of Saddam Hussein and has supported Iraq through political transition,\u00a0post-conflict\u00a0recovery\u00a0and the fight against ISIL, also known as Da\u2019esh.\u00a0The special political mission ends\u00a0its mandate on 31 December.\u00a0<\/p>\n With the country now significantly more stable than it was some\u00a020 years\u00a0ago,\u00a0Iraq is\u00a0working\u00a0towards greater self-reliance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\nAbout the framework<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n
