{"id":79582,"date":"2025-11-05T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/catch-up-immunization-campaign-a-lifeline-for-gazas-children\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T12:00:00","slug":"catch-up-immunization-campaign-a-lifeline-for-gazas-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=79582","title":{"rendered":"Catch-up immunization campaign \u2018a lifeline\u2019 for Gaza\u2019s children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Estimates\u00a0indicate\u00a0one\u00a0in\u00a0five\u00a0children under three are either zero-dose or have missed vaccinations because of the\u00a0war, putting them at risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>The catch-up campaign aims to\u00a0inoculate\u00a0these\u00a0children\u00a0against measles, mumps, and rubella,\u00a0diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, polio,\u00a0rotavirus\u00a0and pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0will be carried out by the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA,\u00a0the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners,\u00a0in collaboration with the\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018A moral imperative\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To help address the devastating impacts of the conflict on children\u2019s health and nutrition, UNICEF and partners will also screen children for malnutrition and ensure\u00a0that\u00a0those\u00a0who have the condition\u00a0receive treatment and ongoing follow-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter two years of relentless violence that claimed the lives of more than\u00a020,000 children\u00a0in the Gaza Strip, we finally have an opportunity to protect those who survived,\u201d said Jonathan Veitch, UNICEF Special Representative in the State of Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaccinating every child, and supporting their health and nutrition, is not just a humanitarian intervention; it is a moral imperative. It is how we safeguard the future of children born into catastrophe and begin to rebuild hope\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0devastation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hundreds of workers trained<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The campaign\u00a0will\u00a0be implemented in three rounds,\u00a0beginning\u00a09 to 18 November.<\/p>\n<p>More than\u00a0450 health workers and support staff have been trained to support vaccination efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0149 medical doctors have been trained to recognize,\u00a0report\u00a0and investigate any health\u00a0concerns\u00a0post\u00a0immunization\u00a0\u2013\u00a0though such cases are extremely rare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Much more is needed\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThis immunization campaign is a lifeline, protecting children\u2019s health and restoring hope for the future,\u201d said Dr.\u00a0Richard\u00a0Peeperkorn, WHO Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He stressed, however, that \u201cmuch more is needed, and WHO is working to rebuild Gaza\u2019s fragile health system so every child, every community, can access the care they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the conflict, Gaza\u00a0maintained\u00a054 immunization facilities.
