{"id":79414,"date":"2025-10-28T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/horrific-violence-as-thousands-flee-sudans-el-fasher\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T12:00:00","slug":"horrific-violence-as-thousands-flee-sudans-el-fasher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=79414","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Horrific\u2019 violence as thousands flee Sudan&#8217;s El Fasher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senior UN refugee agency (UNHCR) official in Sudan, Jacqueline Wilma Parlevliet, said there had been \u201csignificant outflow out of El Fasher into Tawila\u201d \u2013 around 60 kilometres west of the city \u2013 which is already hosting around 650,000 displaced.<\/p>\n<p>New arrivals have recounted stories of widespread ethnically and politically motivated killings, including reports of people with disabilities being executed because they were unable to flee, and others being shot as they tried to escape, said Ms. Parlevliet.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian agencies on the ground in Tawila, including UNHCR, are responding as best they can, providing protection services, counselling, and cash assistance to affected communities.<\/p>\n<h2>Call for humanitarian corridors<\/h2>\n<p>However, the UNHCR official warned that the destruction of infrastructure across Darfur \u2013 markets, hospitals, schools, and homes \u2013 has left civilians with few resources.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, reports have emerged of \u201cmassive killings\u201d in the city of Barah, located in the central Kordofan region, where the RSF recently seized control and carried out similar acts of violence, reported UNHCR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We need peace, we need a ceasefire, we need humanitarian corridors,<\/strong>\u201d Ms. Parlevliet said, emphasising that many civilians left in El Fasher remain unable to flee, with many of them being \u201ctoo weak\u201d and the ongoing situation being \u201ctoo dangerous\u201d for them to move.<\/p>\n<h2>IOM demands protection of civilians<\/h2>\n<p>The UN migration agency, IOM, urged all sides in Sudan\u2019s conflict to protect civilians in El Fasher and allow \u201cimmediate, safe, and unhindered\u201d humanitarian access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn just two days, more than 26,000 people have been forced to flee the city,\u201d said IOM chief Amy Pope, warning that \u201c<strong>scenes emerging from El Fasher are horrific.\u201d Families are walking for days \u201cunder the scorching sun&#8230;with no food, no shelter, no medicine.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IOM said it is rushing tents and emergency shelter kits to Tawila but warned that \u201cneeds are rising faster than aid can reach people.\u201d Pope urged the world to \u201cact now to end the suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Trapped, starving, terrified\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><strong>For the last 18 months, El Fasher has become the \u201cepicentre of suffering\u201d<\/strong>, with hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped under an increasingly tight siege by the RSF, said UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres in a statement issued following the announcement of the withdrawal of Government forces from the city on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>News reports citing satellite imagery suggested that mass atrocities have already been carried out, showing bodies piled up following large-scale executions and house-to-house clearances in El Fasher by RSF fighters.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief said civilians had been \u201ctrapped, starving, and terrified,\u201d as he renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire between the rival military forces.
