{"id":79346,"date":"2025-10-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/millions-pushed-to-brink-of-survival-in-sudan\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T12:00:00","slug":"millions-pushed-to-brink-of-survival-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=79346","title":{"rendered":"Millions pushed to \u2018brink of survival\u2019 in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Sudan stands at the epicentre of one of the world\u2019s \u201cmost severe\u201d humanitarian crises, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p>Over 30 million people now need urgent humanitarian assistance, among them 9.6 million displaced from their homes and nearly 15 million children caught in a struggle for daily survival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is <strong>one of the worst protection crises we\u2019ve seen in decades<\/strong>,\u201d said Kelly Clements, Deputy High Commissioner at the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).<\/p>\n<p>The agency, along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Food Programme (WFP) have issued a joint humanitarian call to action, appealing for immediate international attention to address \u201cthe immense suffering and growing dangers\u201d confronting millions across Sudan.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Return to rubble<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As fighting eases in the capital Khartoum and other parts of Sudan, <strong>nearly 2.6 million people are returning to damaged homes<\/strong>, many without access to water, healthcare, or education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met people coming back to a city still scarred by conflict, where homes are damaged and basic services are barely functioning. Their determination to rebuild is remarkable, but life remains incredibly fragile\u201d, said Ugochi Daniels, IOM\u2019s Deputy Director General for Operations.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, the spread of diseases such as cholera, dengue, and malaria, combined with soaring malnutrition rates, is putting thousands at imminent risk of death without immediate assistance, according to IOM.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Over 260,000 civilians besieged<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, over 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, remain trapped under siege in El Fasher, North Darfur, in what the UN agencies have called a \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p>For more than 16 months, families have been cut off from food, water, and healthcare. As health systems collapse, reports of killings, sexual violence, and forced recruitment into armed militias continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Entire communities are surviving in conditions that defy dignity<\/strong>\u201d, warned Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are malnourished, exposed to violence, and at risk of dying from preventable diseases.
