{"id":75983,"date":"2025-09-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/haitis-security-crisis-is-like-the-sword-of-damocles-above-us-foreign-minister\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T12:00:00","slug":"haitis-security-crisis-is-like-the-sword-of-damocles-above-us-foreign-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=75983","title":{"rendered":"Haiti\u2019s security crisis \u2018is like the Sword of Damocles above us\u2019: Foreign Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Caribbean country remains in the grip of a deepening multidimensional crisis affecting the political, security, human rights and humanitarian spheres, with implications for the region.<\/p>\n<p>Armed gangs control large swathes of the territory, more than six million people are in urgent need of assistance, and 1.4 million have fled their homes, mainly women and children.\u00a0 Killings and abductions are rampant, while cases of sexual and gender-based violence have significantly increased.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ordinary people affected<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The meeting was convened under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) whose Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti is chaired by Ambassador Bob Rae of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>He brought news of the latest violence as eight children were killed that day in a drone strike in the Cit\u00e9 Soleil neighbourhood of the capital, Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to understand that this is not a problem of theory,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a problem that is affecting the daily lives of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discussions were held as the Security Council prepares to resume debate on a proposal by the Secretary-General to establish a new UN Support Office in Haiti.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Canada\u2019s million-dollar pledge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It would provide logistical and operational backing for the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission that is already on the ground backing up the national police in their efforts to combat the gangs and create a secure environment conducive to the holding of elections.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that her country is prepared to pledge an additional $40 million to the MSS and its successor mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are clearly committed to its success, and we count on other partners to also step up their support as the resolution currently proposes a five-fold increase in size, funding, personnel and equipment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Canada will also contribute another $20 million to help improve maritime security in the Caribbean, she added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Priorities and progress<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The situation in Haiti \u201cis like the Sword of Damocles above us,\u201d said the country\u2019s Foreign Minister Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, recalling words he told regional bloc CARICOM on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He outlined priorities, including the need \u201cto re-establish social peace so that the people can vote in safety\u201d and to support the Government in implementing development, economic and social programmes to resolve gang violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these security challenges, there has been progress,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have shown that we can use your aid effectively. Now we need more support in order to conclude this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stability also critical<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In a video message, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed stressed that while security support is indispensable, \u201cit is not enough to break the cycle of crisis\u201d Haiti\u2019s population is facing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStability will only come when security is matched by a political process, credible elections and economic recovery,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means bold financing, blending donor support with investment to mobilize resources at scale and placing them where they matter most: in the hands of the Haitian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new UN Special Representative for Haiti, Carlos Massieu Ruiz, expressed hope that the Security Council will act urgently on the Secretary-General\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n<p>He urged countries to take advantage of this opportunity and reaffirm commitment to Haiti.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe path forward demands political will, vision, but mostly resolve,\u201d he said. \u201cTogether, we can help Haiti and Haitian society, Haitian authorities, to turn the tide and embark on a trajectory of peace recovery and inclusive development.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2025\/09\/1165926\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Caribbean country remains in the grip of a deepening multidimensional crisis affecting the political, security,&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":75984,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[25],"tags":[481,7632,663,3198,1370,366,7631],"class_list":["post-75983","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-america","tag-crisis","tag-damocles","tag-foreign","tag-haitis","tag-minister","tag-security","tag-sword"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
