{"id":7074,"date":"2022-11-02T08:12:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T08:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/mena-region-sports-in-focus\/"},"modified":"2022-11-02T08:12:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T08:12:00","slug":"mena-region-sports-in-focus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=7074","title":{"rendered":"Mena region sports in focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>As a list of 2022 events and major future event bids shows, Middle East and North African countries are committing an increasing amount of time and energy to support a growing roster of international and high-profile national sporting events<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><u><span style=\"color:#FF0000;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/u><u><span style=\"color:#FF0000;\"><strong>Download the infographic<\/strong><\/span><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Region pitches to be global sporting hub<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sport will continue to play an important role in the social and economic development of\u00a0the region<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Middle East will be thrust firmly onto the global stage on\u00a020 November when football\u2019s 2022 World Cup kicks off\u00a0in Qatar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The month-long tournament, held every four years, is the world\u2019s most-watched single event. Football\u2019s governing body Fifa expects this year\u2019s event to set new records with 5 billion people tuning in, up from 3.57 billion for the 2018 edition, which Russia hosted.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament in Qatar will further cement the Middle East\u2019s position as a global sporting hub. Over the past two decades, the region has hosted leading events for sports including athletics, golf, motorsports, boxing and martial arts, swimming, football, cricket and an old regional favourite, horse racing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More is coming. In late 2019, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) selected Doha and Riyadh to host upcoming editions of the Asian Games. Doha was chosen to hold the games for a second time and will host the event in 2030. The\u00a0first time the games took place in the Qatari capital was\u00a0in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Riyadh will host the games four years later, in 2034.
