{"id":60365,"date":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/sudan-guterres-calls-for-ceasefire-in-el-fasher-deplores-relentless-militia-attacks\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","slug":"sudan-guterres-calls-for-ceasefire-in-el-fasher-deplores-relentless-militia-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=60365","title":{"rendered":"Sudan: Guterres calls for ceasefire in El Fasher, deplores \u2018relentless\u2019 militia attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said he was \u201cappalled by the relentless attacks\u201d by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia on the North Darfur state capital, UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The paramilitary group and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been battling for control of devastated country since April 2023 and El Fasher has been the epicentre of fighting for more than 500 days.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shelling, incursions and summary executions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Recent weeks have seen near-continuous shelling in the city and repeated deadly incursions into the adjoining Abu Shouk displacement camp, where famine conditions were identified last December.<\/p>\n<p>Since 11 August, the UN has documented the killing of at least 125 civilians in the El Fasher area, including summary executions \u2013 although the actual number is likely to be higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary-General <strong>is alarmed at the grave risks of serious violations of international humanitarian law <\/strong>as well as\u202fviolations and abuses of international human rights law, <strong>including ethnically motivated ones<\/strong>,\u201d said Mr. Dujarric.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Aid awaiting entry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, supplies are pre-positioned near El Fasher, but the UN and partners continue to face obstacles in moving them into the city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some 70 trucks of humanitarian assistance are currently waiting in Nyala, South Darfur, a top official with the UN aid coordination office OCHA said on Thursday in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dujarric also noted that repeated attacks on humanitarian personnel and assets in North Darfur have occurred over recent months.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ceasefire and a lasting peace<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary-General calls for an immediate\u202fceasefire\u202fin and around the El Fasher area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the UN chief \u201cinsists that <strong>immediate steps must be taken to protect civilians and enable the safe, unhindered and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance into the area<\/strong>, and to allow any civilians seeking to leave the area voluntarily to do so safely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u202fIn the interim, the Secretary-General\u2019s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, continues to engage the warring parties and \u201cstands ready to support genuine efforts to halt the violence and establish an inclusive political process that the people of Sudan demand.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2025\/08\/1165742\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said he was \u201cappalled by the relentless attacks\u201d by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":60026,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[370,297,646,2456,1266,1074,7400,2267,1028],"class_list":["post-60365","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-africa","tag-attacks","tag-calls","tag-ceasefire","tag-deplores","tag-fasher","tag-guterres","tag-militia","tag-relentless","tag-sudan"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
