{"id":60363,"date":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/the-descent-into-a-massive-famine-in-gaza-has-begun-relief-agencies-warn\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:00:00","slug":"the-descent-into-a-massive-famine-in-gaza-has-begun-relief-agencies-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=60363","title":{"rendered":"The descent into \u2018a massive famine\u2019 in Gaza has begun, relief agencies warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Although the private aid platform run by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation continues to receive its own supplies, <strong>\u201cwe are on a descent into a massive famine\u201d,<\/strong> insisted Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the latest catastrophic assessment of food insecurity in Gaza from the UN-backed\u00a0IPC group of experts, Mr. Laerke noted that 500,000 people are in the worst possible situation today, with another 160,000 expected to be added to that number in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Everyone lacks food<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThey all need food,\u201d he told journalists in Geneva.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c<strong>The entire Gaza Strip needs food. There would not have been declared famine had there been sufficient amounts of food<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the growing risk of communicable diseases in Gaza, with 94 suspected cases of Guillain-Barr\u00e9 Syndrome now reported.<\/p>\n<p>The disease can cause paralysis and is treatable in hospital with intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange, according to WHO. \u201cBut <strong>these two [treatments] are at zero stock, as are anti-inflammatories<\/strong>,\u201d said WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier, referencing ongoing Israeli aid restrictions impacting humanitarian relief supplies entering Gaza. \u201cThese deliveries must be urgently expedited as much as surveillance and testing capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between 20 and 26 August, out of 89 attempts to coordinate relief missions with Israeli authorities across Gaza, 53 were facilitated, 23 were initially approved but then impeded on the ground, seven were denied and six had to be withdrawn by the organizers, OCHA said in an\u00a0update.<\/p>\n<h5><em><strong>More to come on this developing story\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2025\/08\/1165741\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the private aid platform run by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation continues to&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":60364,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[1394,6464,7399,2014,190,1364,1473,1451],"class_list":["post-60363","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-middle-east","tag-agencies","tag-begun","tag-descent","tag-famine","tag-gaza","tag-massive","tag-relief","tag-warn"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
