{"id":56668,"date":"2025-05-09T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/haiti-displaced-families-grapple-with-death-from-the-inside-and-out\/"},"modified":"2025-05-09T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T12:00:00","slug":"haiti-displaced-families-grapple-with-death-from-the-inside-and-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=56668","title":{"rendered":"Haiti: Displaced families grapple with death \u2018from the inside\u2019 and out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In March, the family fled the gangs again \u2013 this time to Boucan-Carr\u00e9 where Leineda\u2019s treatments were put on hold:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Sometimes, we suffer from silent illnesses that destroy us from the inside<\/strong>,\u201d Christiana said.<\/p>\n<h2>Gangs on the march<\/h2>\n<p>In the past few months, armed gangs in Haiti have been expanding their reach beyond Port-au-Prince towards the Centre and Artibonite Departments, displacing around 64,000 from those areas, according to UN estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian efforts to reach displaced communities have been disrupted by regional insecurity and funding shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing on the ground is unimaginable. Communities are being displaced daily, and <strong>the images of women and children fleeing for their lives with nothing are heartbreaking<\/strong>,\u201d said Wanja Kaaria, the UN World Food Programme\u2019s (WFP) Haiti director.<\/p>\n<h2>Attacks beyond the capital<\/h2>\n<p>The assassination of Haiti\u2019s President Jovenel Mo\u00efse in 2021 triggered widespread gang violence in the capital Port-au-Prince. Around 85 per cent of the city is now controlled by gangs. Over one million Haitians have been displaced because of this violence.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, organised crime groups have expanded their attacks into the Centre Department in western Haiti and neighboring Artibonite in northern Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>In late March, one of the gangs attacked Mirebalais, killing at least 15 civilians and leading to a jailbreak of 515 inmates. In late April, gang members attacked the commune of Petite-Rivi\u00e8re in Artibonite, killing dozens and damaging scores of homes.<\/p>\n<p>Other gang attacks have occurred in the suburbs of Port-au-Prince and throughout Centre, including in Hinche, Boucan-Carr\u00e9 and Saut d\u2019Eau.<\/p>\n<h2>Navigating humanitarian aid blockages<\/h2>\n<p>After these attacks in the Centre and Artibonite Departments, over 64,000 people have been displaced according to estimates from the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross Haiti and as we have seen this week in the Centre region especially, <strong>children are trapped in a cycle of fear and suffering, reliving the same nightmare day after day<\/strong>. What they need most urgently is an end to the violence,\u201d Geeta Narayan, United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) representative in Haiti, said.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of ongoing gang activity and security conditions in the region, local authorities have had to scale back humanitarian aid deliveries. UN Children\u2019s Fund, UNICEF, has cancelled planned field missions.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly difficult for displaced families who are fully reliant on this aid. Danise, a mother of two, has been displaced many times \u2013 first leaving her home in J\u00e9r\u00e9mie, then being deported from the Dominican Republic, next, fleeing violence in Mirebalais before finally settling in Boucan Carr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI barely have anything to give [my children],\u201d Danise said. \u201cI always have to wait for food distributions to feed them&#8230;I just want to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Libraries\/Production%20Library\/2025-05-09-UNICEF-Haiti_02.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Dozens of people displaced from the Haitian communes of Mirebalais and Saut-d\u2019Eau attend hygiene awareness sessions in Boucan Carr\u00e9.\" title=\"Dozens of people displaced from the Haitian communes of Mirebalais and Saut-d\u2019Eau attend hygiene awareness sessions in Boucan Carr\u00e9.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dozens of people displaced from the Haitian communes of Mirebalais and Saut-d\u2019Eau attend hygiene awareness sessions in Boucan Carr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Providing relief to displaced communities<\/h2>\n<p>In spite of deteriorating security, UN aid teams are working with local partners and departmental authorities to continue providing resources to displaced civilians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Displaced people have had their] lives upended \u2013 entire families struggling to access water, healthcare or adequate shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) \u201cremains engaged alongside local authorities and partners to strengthen humanitarian action, despite limited resources, and continues to advocate for increased support,\u201d Modibo Traore, OCHA\u2019s Head of Office in Haiti, said.<\/p>\n<p>Across the Centre Department, UNICEF has reached 8,500 people with resources, including six mobile clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are scaling up our response in the Centre department, providing critical health care, <strong>reaching thousands of children with psychosocial support, safe water and access to education where it\u2019s needed most<\/strong>,\u201d Ms. Narayan said.<\/p>\n<p>WFP is also working in the Centre Department to provide hot meals and food kits to displaced communities and has provided assistance to over 13,100 displaced individuals in this region as of early May.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is the moment to step up. The future of Haiti depends on the actions we take today<br \/><em>\u2013 WFP Country Director Wanja Kaaria<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWFP food assistance offers dignity for families now living with little hope. <strong>However, funding constraints are impeding us from responding at scale<\/strong>.\u201d Ms Kaaria said.<\/p>\n<p>WFP estimates that it will need $72.4 million over the next 12 months and UNICEF estimates that it will need $1.2 million over the next six months to deal with the ongoing displacements in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the moment to step up. The future of Haiti depends on the actions we take today,\u201d Ms Kaaria said.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding dignity through care<\/h2>\n<p>In recent days, young Leineda has begun to receive the treatment she needs for malnutrition at the Boucan Carr\u00e9 site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel happy today because before, we didn\u2019t have any doctors to examine us or understand our pain,\u201d Christiana said. The presence of the doctors brings back a sense of dignity.
