Kosmos 482, a failed Soviet Venus probe launched in 1972, is expected to re-enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere between\u00a0May 9 and May 11, 2025\u2014prompting both curiosity and concern among scientists and space enthusiasts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"871\">This spacecraft, designed to survive the inferno of Venus, may now be returning to Earth more intact than any other derelict Soviet mission before it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1307\">Kosmos 482\u2014also spelled Cosmos 482\u2014was part of the ambitious\u00a0<strong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"993\">Venera program<\/strong>, a series of interplanetary missions launched by the Soviet Union between 1961 and 1984. These probes were aimed at exploring\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1129\">Venus<\/strong>, Earth\u2019s scorching, high-pressure twin. The mission\u2019s goal: land on Venus, survive long enough to transmit scientific data, and score another win in the Cold War-era space race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1544\">Launched from the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1327\" data-end=\"1350\">Baikonur Cosmodrome<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1372\">March 31, 1972<\/strong>, Kosmos 482 was a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1391\" data-end=\"1421\">sister mission to Venera 8<\/strong>, which successfully landed on Venus just months later. But unlike its twin, Kosmos 482 never made it past Earth\u2019s gravity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1855\">Shortly after reaching low-Earth orbit, a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1631\">malfunction during the upper stage burn<\/strong>\u00a0prevented the spacecraft from achieving\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"1691\">escape velocity<\/strong>\u2014the speed needed to leave Earth\u2019s orbit and enter a trajectory toward Venus. Instead of heading into deep space, the probe became an unintended satellite of Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"2215\">According to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1870\" data-end=\"1888\">NASA\u2019s records<\/strong>, the spacecraft split into four pieces after the failed burn. Two re-entered the atmosphere and disintegrated within 48 hours. The remaining two\u2014including the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2066\">descent module<\/strong>, which had been built to survive Venus\u2019s brutal environment\u2014settled into a long elliptical orbit ranging from 210 km to nearly 9,800 km above Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2256\">That\u2019s where it has remained\u2014until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2428\">After 53 years in orbit, atmospheric drag has finally taken its toll.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"2427\">Kosmos 482 is on a collision course with Earth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2678\">Experts say that due to space weather and limited insight into the probe\u2019s condition,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2598\">the exact time and location of the re-entry cannot be predicted with certainty<\/strong>. However, analysts suggest it will occur sometime\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2677\">between May 9 and May 11<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"3013\">Satellite tracker\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2717\">Ralf Vandebergh<\/strong>\u00a0of the Netherlands, who has been monitoring Kosmos 482 for years, recently captured high-resolution images of the object. His photos show a compact, spherical body\u2014likely the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"2911\">descent module<\/strong>\u2014accompanied by a faint trailing structure that may be a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2968\" data-end=\"3012\">tattered parachute or a degraded antenna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3015\" data-end=\"3221\">\u201cSeveral frames seem to confirm what I thought I saw in 2014,\u201d Vandebergh told\u00a0<em data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3106\">Space News<\/em>. \u201cThere is a compact ball, but several frames show a weak elongated structure at one particular side of the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3223\" data-end=\"3358\">This observation adds to growing consensus that it is\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3277\" data-end=\"3301\">not the entire probe<\/strong>, but rather the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3337\">descent capsule<\/strong> that is re-entering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3401\" data-end=\"3607\">Earth is constantly bombarded by space debris\u2014from defunct satellites to natural meteoroids. Most burn up harmlessly due to the intense heat and friction caused by re-entry. But\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3579\" data-end=\"3606\">Kosmos 482 is different<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3609\" data-end=\"3881\">It was designed to survive the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3640\" data-end=\"3663\">Venusian atmosphere<\/strong>, which is\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3674\" data-end=\"3706\">90 times denser than Earth\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0and hot enough to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3725\" data-end=\"3738\">melt lead<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3744\" data-end=\"3762\">descent module<\/strong>\u00a0is equipped with a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3782\" data-end=\"3803\">thick heat shield<\/strong>\u00a0meant to endure temperatures well above 460\u00b0C (860\u00b0F) and crushing pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3883\" data-end=\"3976\">That same rugged engineering could enable it to survive Earth\u2019s atmospheric re-entry as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3978\" data-end=\"4219\">Dr.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3982\" data-end=\"4001\">Marco Langbroek<\/strong>, a Dutch satellite expert and space historian, explained the situation in an email to\u00a0<em data-start=\"4088\" data-end=\"4102\">The Guardian<\/em>. If the object remains intact, he said, it could hit the Earth\u2019s surface at a speed of up to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4196\" data-end=\"4218\">242 km\/h (150 mph)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4221\" data-end=\"4412\">\u201cWhile not without risk, we should not be too worried,\u201d Langbroek said. \u201cThe chance of being struck by debris from Kosmos 482 is very small\u2014<strong data-start=\"4361\" data-end=\"4410\">comparable to being hit by a random meteorite<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4414\" data-end=\"4544\">He emphasized that statistically,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4505\">a person is far more likely to be struck by lightning<\/strong>\u00a0than to be injured by this spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4546\" data-end=\"4836\">Still, the impact location remains unknown. The spacecraft\u2019s decaying orbit means that\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4633\" data-end=\"4674\">it could come down virtually anywhere<\/strong>\u00a0between\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4683\" data-end=\"4709\">52\u00b0N and 52\u00b0S latitude<\/strong>\u2014a wide band that includes parts of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4745\" data-end=\"4814\">Africa, South America, the United States, Australia, Europe, Asia<\/strong>, and even\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4825\" data-end=\"4835\">Canada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4880\" data-end=\"4971\">This isn\u2019t the first time a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4908\" data-end=\"4970\">Soviet spacecraft has returned to Earth in unintended ways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4973\" data-end=\"5390\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4973\" data-end=\"5077\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4975\" data-end=\"5077\">In\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4978\" data-end=\"4986\">1965<\/strong>, debris from\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5000\" data-end=\"5013\">Kosmos 96<\/strong>, another failed Venus mission, landed in\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5055\" data-end=\"5076\">Pennsylvania, USA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5078\" data-end=\"5196\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5080\" data-end=\"5196\">In\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5083\" data-end=\"5091\">1972<\/strong>, parts of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5102\" data-end=\"5116\">Kosmos 482<\/strong>\u00a0itself reportedly fell in\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5143\" data-end=\"5158\">New Zealand<\/strong>, shortly after the mission\u2019s failure.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5197\" data-end=\"5390\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5199\" data-end=\"5390\">Perhaps most famously,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5222\" data-end=\"5236\">Kosmos 954<\/strong>, a nuclear-powered satellite, crashed into\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5280\" data-end=\"5314\">Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5318\" data-end=\"5326\">1978<\/strong>, scattering\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5339\" data-end=\"5363\">radioactive material<\/strong>\u00a0over a 600-kilometer path.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5392\" data-end=\"5587\">These accidents highlight the perils of space exploration during the Cold War\u2014an era defined not only by geopolitical tension but also by a relentless rush to dominate space, often at great risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5616\" data-end=\"5760\">Despite its failure,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5637\" data-end=\"5736\">Kosmos 482 was part of one of the most scientifically valuable efforts in planetary exploration<\/strong>\u2014the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5741\" data-end=\"5759\">Venera program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5762\" data-end=\"6053\">Between\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5770\" data-end=\"5787\">1961 and 1984<\/strong>, the Soviet Union launched a total of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5826\" data-end=\"5847\">28 Venus missions<\/strong>, of which\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5858\" data-end=\"5909\">16 were part of the official Venera designation<\/strong>. The probes achieved\u00a0<strong data-start=\"5931\" data-end=\"5960\">seven successful landings<\/strong>, making the USSR the only country to have conducted\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6013\" data-end=\"6052\">direct surface exploration of Venus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6055\" data-end=\"6094\">These missions yielded historic firsts:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"6095\" data-end=\"6379\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"6095\" data-end=\"6193\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6097\" data-end=\"6193\"><strong data-start=\"6097\" data-end=\"6109\">Venera 7<\/strong>\u00a0(1970) was the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6192\">first spacecraft to transmit data from another planet\u2019s surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"6194\" data-end=\"6281\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6196\" data-end=\"6281\"><strong data-start=\"6196\" data-end=\"6215\">Venera 9 and 10<\/strong>\u00a0(1975) sent back the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6237\" data-end=\"6280\">first black-and-white images from Venus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"6282\" data-end=\"6379\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6284\" data-end=\"6379\"><strong data-start=\"6284\" data-end=\"6297\">Venera 13<\/strong>\u00a0(1982) delivered the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6319\" data-end=\"6346\">first color photographs<\/strong>\u00a0and conducted\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6361\" data-end=\"6378\">soil analysis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6381\" data-end=\"6629\">The data gathered revealed a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6410\" data-end=\"6428\">hostile planet<\/strong>: a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6432\" data-end=\"6466\">carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6468\" data-end=\"6492\">sulfuric acid clouds<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6498\" data-end=\"6538\">surface temperatures exceeding 460\u00b0C<\/strong>. After\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6808\" data-end=\"6816\">1985<\/strong>, no lander\u2014Soviet or otherwise\u2014has touched the surface of Venus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6883\" data-end=\"6943\">Kosmos 482 was meant to be a part of that pioneering legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6998\" data-end=\"7316\">Like many Soviet space failures,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"7031\" data-end=\"7087\">Kosmos 482\u2019s malfunction was kept secret at the time<\/strong>. The USSR had a habit of naming unsuccessful missions\u00a0<strong data-start=\"7142\" data-end=\"7154\">\u201cKosmos\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0to disguise their purpose. It\u2019s a time capsule\u2014a piece of Cold War ambition trapped in Earth orbit, finally returning home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"9378\" data-end=\"9653\">Its story is also a cautionary tale.
