{"id":55203,"date":"2025-04-01T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/sudan-on-brink-of-famine-as-fighting-ravages-darfur-un-warns\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T20:00:00","slug":"sudan-on-brink-of-famine-as-fighting-ravages-darfur-un-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=55203","title":{"rendered":"Sudan on brink of famine as fighting ravages Darfur, UN warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric warned that \u201cthe humanitarian and security situation in Sudan remains dire and is worsening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted intense fighting around El Fasher, noting, \u201cwe are gravely alarmed by reports of intensified hostilities&#8230; including attacks in the past two days that resulted in civilian casualties.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plight of displaced persons is particularly acute. \u201cYesterday, reported shelling in the Abu Shouk displacement camp&#8230; killed and injured civilians,\u201d Mr. Dujarric confirmed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Famine taking hold<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This camp is among the critical hotspots where famine is taking hold, alongside Zamzam and Al Salam, and areas in the Western Nuba Mountains, affecting approximately 640,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is making an urgent call for action to prevent widespread famine, especially as the lean and rainy season approaches. \u201cIt is critical that aid organisations have the safe and unimpeded access to people in need,\u201d OCHA emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, around 25 million Sudanese face acute food insecurity, a number expected to peak between June and September. Beyond immediate food aid, agricultural assistance is vital to boost local production. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) requires over $82 million to support 7.5 million farmers with seeds and essential resources before the planting season in June.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Time is running out\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWith the rainy season starting soon, and flooding along key routes likely to compound access challenges, time is running out,\u201d Mr. Dujarric warned.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict has devastated agricultural livelihoods, a lifeline for two-thirds of Sudan&#8217;s population. \u201cThe ongoing conflict in Sudan has shattered agricultural livelihoods&#8230; disrupted market access and left millions of farming families unable to plant or harvest,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Destruction of infrastructure and forced displacement have worsened the crisis. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Economic decline and trade restrictions have driven up food prices sharply, limiting access to basic necessities, the UN Spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOCHA stresses that timely support to Sudan\u2019s farmers is essential \u2013 not only to avert famine&#8230;but also to restore livelihoods and build resilience.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the UN\u2019s position that civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be a target. \u201cAll parties must uphold their obligations&#8230; and take the utmost care to spare civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2025\/04\/1161766\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric warned that \u201cthe humanitarian and security situation in Sudan remains dire and is&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":53980,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[1844,5846,2014,391,5902,1028,368],"class_list":["post-55203","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-africa","tag-brink","tag-darfur","tag-famine","tag-fighting","tag-ravages","tag-sudan","tag-warns"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
