{"id":49348,"date":"2024-12-05T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/children-of-sudan-show-a-strength-that-deserves-recognition\/"},"modified":"2024-12-05T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T12:00:00","slug":"children-of-sudan-show-a-strength-that-deserves-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=49348","title":{"rendered":"Children of Sudan show \u2018a strength that deserves recognition\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Despite the staggering challenges, he found hope and resilience in their stories.<\/p>\n<p>The nearly 19 months of relentless conflict in Sudan has devastated millions, with children bearing the brunt of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over five million children have been forcibly displaced, according to the UN<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, UNICEF and its partners have been delivering critical health supplies, screening for malnutrition, and assisting in safe spaces where children can learn, play, and receive support.<\/p>\n<h2>A shared experience of conflict<\/h2>\n<p>Ishmael Beah, a human rights activist and former child soldier forcibly recruited at 13 in Sierra Leone, has worked with UNICEF since his appointment as Goodwill Ambassador in 2007. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His time in Sudan brought him face-to-face with children in displacement camps, many of whom have endured unimaginable trauma. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In one UNICEF-supported child-friendly space, he was able to share his own journey, growing up in the middle of a harrowing conflict. In turn, the children opened up about their dreams for the future.<\/p>\n<p>These spaces provide opportunities for vulnerable children to learn, play, interact with friends, receive emotional support and begin to regain some sense of normalcy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the unbelievable challenges they have faced fleeing their homes, they demonstrated incredible wisdom that serves as the basis of their resilience,\u201d Mr. Beah said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The children of Sudan] have a strength that deserves recognition and respect and are not letting their dreams to be doctors, engineers, or artists be shattered by this conflict,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_large_uncropped_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-large-uncropped-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-authors field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<p>\u00a9 UNICEF\/Ahmed Mohamdeen Elfatih<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A displaced child at a UNICEF-supported site in Port Sudan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The future of Sudan\u2019s youth<\/h2>\n<p>The children\u2019s stories echoed the broader crisis unfolding across Sudan, now one of the world\u2019s most urgent displacement crises. Families are frequently forced to flee, only to be displaced again as fighting spreads. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Girls have shouldered a particularly heavy burden, facing terrifying risks to their safety, including rape and other forms of sexual violence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between January and September 2024 alone, <strong>UNICEF verified more than 1,500 grave violations against children<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout urgent action and additional resources, Sudan risks a generational catastrophe that will have grave implications for the country, the region, and beyond,\u201d warned Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative for Sudan. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Beah emphasised the resilience and determination of Sudanese youth, saying, \u201c<strong>[The children of Sudan] are remarkably intelligent, resourceful, and hopeful for the future of Sudan.<\/strong>\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sudanese youth I met do not plan on giving up on their nation and do not want the world to do that either,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Libraries\/Production%20Library\/05-12-2024-UNICEF-Sudan-Beah3.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Ishmael Beah visits children at a UNICEF-supported child-friendly space in Port Sudan.\" title=\"Ishmael Beah visits children at a UNICEF-supported child-friendly space in Port Sudan.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-authors field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<p>\u00a9 UNICEF\/Ahmed Mohamdeen Elfatih<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ishmael Beah visits children at a UNICEF-supported child-friendly space in Port Sudan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A call to action<\/h2>\n<p>The Goodwill Ambassador\u2019s visit coincided with the launch of UNICEF\u2019s 2025 global Humanitarian Action for Children Appeal on 5 December.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal seeks $9.9 billion to provide lifesaving aid to 109 million children, with <strong>Sudan representing the second-largest funding request<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must act now, the children in Sudan cannot wait any longer,\u201d urged the UNICEF Representative for Sudan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/feed\/view\/en\/story\/2024\/12\/1157831\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the staggering challenges, he found hope and resilience in their stories.
