{"id":4924,"date":"2022-09-30T16:02:13","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T16:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/new-lonely-planet-guide-shines-a-light-on-britains-hidden-muslim-heritage\/"},"modified":"2022-09-30T16:02:13","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T16:02:13","slug":"new-lonely-planet-guide-shines-a-light-on-britains-hidden-muslim-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=4924","title":{"rendered":"New Lonely Planet guide shines a light on Britain\u2019s hidden Muslim heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\nLONDON: A new Lonely Planet guide to Great Britain features an entire chapter on the country\u2019s little-known Islamic heritage, which stretches back more than 1,200 years.<\/p>\n<p>\nPublished this month, \u201cExperience Great Britain\u201d is part of the publisher\u2019s range of \u201canti-guidebooks,\u201d so-called because of the unique local perspectives they offer travelers.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe guide to Britain has sections and essays titled \u201cLegacies of Empire,\u201d \u201cBristol\u2019s Black History,\u201d \u201cAn Other London\u201d and \u201cHidden Muslim Britain,\u201d all of which seek to shine a light on the nation\u2019s marginalized cultures and their stories.<\/p>\n<p>\nTharik Hussain, the Muslim author of \u201cMinarets in the Mountains: A Journey Into Muslim Europe,\u201d which explores the continent\u2019s indigenous Muslim cultures, contributed to the new travel guide.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cI think it is wonderful to see mainstream guidebooks like this finally going out of their way to include such really diverse experiences for visitors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cSo often, writers like me are brought onto such projects to tick a box and create the impression there are diverse perspectives in it, but actually we\u2019re often asked to just write about the same things covered by the previous writers. What\u2019s diverse about that?<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cTo achieve truly diverse perspectives commissioning editors must select writers from different backgrounds and then be brave and empower writers to come back with what they find interesting, even if that goes against the editor\u2019s expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nHussain, who developed one of the UK\u2019s first Muslim heritage trails, wrote the \u201cHidden Muslim Britain\u201d chapter, which focuses on Woking \u2014 home to the UK\u2019s first purpose-built mosque, the Shah Jahan \u2014 Liverpool and Brighton, where some of the country\u2019s most visible Islamic legacies can be found.<\/p>\n<p>\nThese include Britain\u2019s first Muslim cemetery \u2014 the final resting place of convert lords, ladies and Muslim royalty \u2014 and Brighton Pavilion, where injured Muslim (as well as Sikh and Hindu) soldiers fighting for Britain in World War I were treated.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><br \/><figcaption>The guide also tells of cultural institutes set up by the Turkish, Palestinian, Bangladeshi and Black communities in London. (Supplied\/Tharik Hussain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\u201cThe guide also reveals where to visit spectacular \u2018oriental rooms\u2019 modeled on famous Muslim palaces like the Alhambra in Spain and the Topkapi in Turkey,\u201d Hussain said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThis is supported by an essay called Anglo Islam that reveals how Islam came to the island as early as the 8th century, when an Anglo-Saxon king called Offa minted a gold coin featuring part of the Muslim declaration of faith in Arabic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe essay also tells of how Britain\u2019s first real Muslim community \u201cwere a group of white, convert Victorians who worshipped at the country\u2019s first mosque in Liverpool, founded by a solicitor called Henry William Quilliam, later Abdullah Quilliam,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe section on empire tells visitors where they can go to learn about \u201cthe horrors of British imperial rule,\u201d and how to experience more positive post-colonial legacies like the stunning Neasden Temple in northwest London, built by immigrants who moved to Britain after the collapse of the empire, Hussain said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe guide also tells of the cultural institutes set up by the Turkish, Palestinian, Bangladeshi and Black communities in London, like the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton, and offers alternatives to the usual tourist attractions, such as the Muslim History Tours and the Open City walking tours that explore London\u2019s forgotten Chinese heritage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2172956\/lifestyle\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON: A new Lonely Planet guide to Great Britain features an entire chapter on the country\u2019s&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4924","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-lifestyle"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
