{"id":47086,"date":"2024-10-29T11:38:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T11:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/unrwa-cannot-be-replaced-say-un-top-officials-in-response-to-knesset-ban\/"},"modified":"2024-10-29T11:38:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T11:38:56","slug":"unrwa-cannot-be-replaced-say-un-top-officials-in-response-to-knesset-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=47086","title":{"rendered":"UNRWA cannot be replaced, say UN top officials in response to Knesset ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Echoing UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u2019s warning late Monday that the development would likely have <strong>\u201cdevastating consequences\u201d<\/strong> as UNRWA is the principal deliverer of aid relief inside the war-torn enclave, UN human rights chief Volker T\u00fcrk called the Knesset move \u201c<strong>deeply troubling<\/strong> for many reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Geneva, spokesperson for the UN human rights office (OHCHR) Jeremy Laurence said that the High Commissioner had pointed to the \u201cpotential dire impact\u201d on the rights of all those who depend on the UN Relief and Works Agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout UNRWA, the delivery of food, healthcare, education, among other things, to most of Gaza\u201ds population, would grind to a halt,\u201d he said. \u201cCivilians have already paid the heaviest price of this conflict over the past year. Truly, this decision will only make matters worse for them, far worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OHCHR spokesperson reiterated previous concerns \u201cabout Israel\u2019s compliance with international law\u201d with regard to its intense bombardment of Gaza, where tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, according to the local authorities.
