{"id":45129,"date":"2024-09-26T10:49:17","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T10:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/covid-was-like-a-daily-terror-attack-doctor-tells-inquiry\/"},"modified":"2024-09-26T10:49:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T10:49:17","slug":"covid-was-like-a-daily-terror-attack-doctor-tells-inquiry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=45129","title":{"rendered":"Covid was like a daily terror attack, doctor tells inquiry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prof Fong described Covid as the \u201cbiggest national emergency this country has faced since World War Two\u201d, and repeatedly broke down on the stand while describing what he had seen and his conversations with other staff members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the pandemic, Prof Fong, a consultant anaesthetist, conducted around 40 visits of intensive care units on behalf of NHS England to offer peer support to the doctors and nurses working there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He wrote reports which were sent back to managers including England\u2019s chief medical officer Prof Sir Chris Whitty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said the \u201cscale of death\u201d was \u201cvery difficult to capture in the figures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cIt was truly, truly astounding\u2026 We had nurses talking about patients \u2018raining from the sky\u2019, where one of the nurses told me they got tired of putting people in body bags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cWe went to another unit where things got so bad they were so short of resources, they ran out of body bags and instead were stuck with nine-foot clear plastic sacks and cable ties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cThese are people who are used to seeing death but not on that scale and not like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said that \u201cdespite the best efforts of everyone in the system\u201d the surge of demand for healthcare caused by Covid meant it was \u201cnot possible to deliver the standard of care that would ordinarily be expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At the end of his evidence, he was thanked by the inquiry\u2019s chairwoman Baroness Hallett who said \u201cit was obvious how distressing it was for you and reliving such an ordeal is never easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cz9py388z17o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof Fong described Covid as the \u201cbiggest national emergency this country has faced since World War&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":45132,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[506,1358,3014,1872,1359,782,806],"class_list":["post-45129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","tag-attack","tag-covid","tag-daily","tag-doctor","tag-inquiry","tag-tells","tag-terror"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
