{"id":45039,"date":"2024-09-25T02:05:57","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T02:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/myopia-one-in-three-children-are-short-sighted-study\/"},"modified":"2024-09-25T02:05:57","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T02:05:57","slug":"myopia-one-in-three-children-are-short-sighted-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=45039","title":{"rendered":"Myopia: One in three children are short-sighted &#8211; study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Paraguay and Uganda, at about 1%, had some of the lowest levels of myopia, with the UK, Ireland and the US all about 15%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The study, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span>, looked at research involving more than five million children and teenagers from 50 countries across all six continents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Their number-crunching revealed that short-sightedness tripled between 1990 and 2023 &#8211; rising to 36%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And the increase was &#8220;particularly notable&#8221; after the Covid pandemic, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Myopia usually starts during primary school years and tends to worsen until the eye has stopped growing, at about 20 years of age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There are factors that make it much more likely &#8211; living in East Asia is one of those.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is also down to genetics &#8211; the traits children inherit from their parents &#8211; but there are other factors too, such as the particularly young age (two years old) that children start their education in places like Singapore and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This means they are spending more time focusing on books and screens with their eyes during their early years, which strains the eye muscles and can lead to myopia, research suggests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In Africa, where schooling starts at the age of six to eight years old, myopia is seven times less common than in Asia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0m099zm4wyo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paraguay and Uganda, at about 1%, had some of the lowest levels of myopia, with the&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":45042,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[412,2977,2978,1722],"class_list":["post-45039","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","tag-children","tag-myopia","tag-shortsighted","tag-study"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v28.5) -
