In a statement released via his Spokesperson, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres condemned the latest Israeli attack on a school serving as a shelter in Nuseirat on Wednesday, which killed six staffers from the UN Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA, along with at least 12 others<\/strong>, including women and children.<\/p>\n \u201cThis incident raises the number of UNRWA staff killed in this conflict to 220,\u201d UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric told correspondents at UN Headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Israeli Defense Forces stated that they had targeted a command-and-control centre in the compound,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cThis incident must be independently and thoroughly investigated to ensure accountability<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n The UN chief demanded that all combatants protect the lives and \u201cessential needs\u201d of civilians throughout the Gaza Strip, urging them to stop using schools and shelters \u2013 or the areas around them \u2013 for military purposes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n All parties are obliged to\u00a0always comply with international humanitarian law, Mr. Dujarric underscored.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe Secretary-General reiterates his call for\u00a0an immediate\u00a0ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages<\/strong> being held in Gaza.
