At the same time, the war has also triggered colossal suffering within Sudan\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe humanitarian task that we have in Sudan has been very big,\u201d UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said. \u201cIt has been one that we have been consistently supporting the government to try to address the crisis. The suffering of the people in this country is one of the<a> worst crises in the world today.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"align-right context-un_news_large_uncropped_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-large-uncropped-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of people in Sudan have been affected by heavy rains and flash floods since June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ms. Mohammed met officials in Chad and announced $5 million allocation from the UN\u2019s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) as part of a rapid response towards supporting flood recovery efforts, UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric told reporters at UN Headquarters on Friday.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Region in crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Chad and neighbouring Sudan have been grappling with multiple crises. That includes the ongoing Sudanese war and recent floods affecting 960,000 people in Chad and 310,000 in Sudan, according to UN agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions between the UN deputy chief and local authorities in Chad centred on the complex challenges facing the country, including regional dynamics and key risks, and highlighted \u201cthe urgent need for global solidarity\u201d, the UN Spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Reaffirming the UN\u2019s commitment, Ms. Mohammed called for \u201cmaximum solidarity and resources\u201d to ensure the humanitarian response fulfills its mandate and supports the people of the region, urging parties \u201cto invest more in saving lives and livelihoods\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Vital lifeline for aid delivery\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While in Chad, Ms. Mohammed observed the humanitarian corridor operation at the newly opened Adr\u00e9 crossing point into Sudan and engaged with refugee representatives, women, youth and community leaders, welcoming the recent opening as \u201ca positive step\u201d towards providing lifesaving aid in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crossing is a vital lifeline for aid delivery to millions in Sudan and must remain open and accessible to facilitate large-scale humanitarian assistance while ensuring the safety of aid workers,\u201d according to the UN Spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>Shuttered for one year, this humanitarian corridor will allow UN agencies to scale up assistance to 14 areas facing famine in Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum and Al Jazirah.<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/Embargoed\/30-08-2023-UN-DSG-Chad-05.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Un Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed (right) visits Adr\u00e9, Chad, at the border crossing with Sudan.\" title=\"Un Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed (right) visits Adr\u00e9, Chad, at the border crossing with Sudan.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-authors field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<p>United Nations\/Daniel Getachew<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Un Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed (right) visits Adr\u00e9, Chad, at the border crossing with Sudan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>\u2018We need resources now\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The UN deputy chief underlined the critical importance of keeping the border crossing permanently open.<\/p>\n<p>The Adr\u00e9 crossing is the most effective and shortest route to deliver humanitarian assistance into Sudan \u2013 and particularly the Darfur region \u2013 at the scale and speed required to respond to the immense hunger crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have to do is to match the openings of these borders with the aid that goes in, and that means resources,\u201d she insisted, \u201cand so we need those resources, and we need them now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UN $2.7 billion appeal is only 41 per cent funded.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sudan: War, displacement and hunger<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Across the border, in Sudan, food security experts recently declared that the war has pushed parts of North Darfur state into famine, particularly the Zamzam camp, where more than half a million displaced people are sheltering.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The suffering of the people in this country is one of the worst crises in the world today<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>About 25.6 million people \u2013 over half of the population of Sudan \u2013 face acute hunger, including more than 755,000 people on the brink of famine and an estimated 10.7 million people are now internally displaced, according to UN agencies.<\/p>\n<p>When visiting Sudan earlier this week, Ms. Mohammed met with the country\u2019s President and cabinet members, who agreed that the Jeddah peace process must be implemented swiftly.
