{"id":42179,"date":"2024-07-31T20:38:07","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T20:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/two-new-dementia-risks-identified-by-major-report\/"},"modified":"2024-07-31T20:38:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-31T20:38:07","slug":"two-new-dementia-risks-identified-by-major-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=42179","title":{"rendered":"Two new dementia risks identified by major report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Some factors are more of a risk than others, the report suggests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For example, it estimates that hearing loss and high cholesterol are responsible for most cases of preventable dementia (7% each).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In early life it is lack of education that tips the balance while, in later life, social isolation and failing eyesight are a big risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Some experts are more cautious about what the evidence shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prof Tara Spires-Jones, director of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, said this type of research could not conclusively link any of these factors directly to dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, she said it would contribute to growing evidence that a healthy lifestyle &#8220;can boost brain resilience and prevent dementia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We should be careful not to imply that people with dementia could have avoided it if they\u2019d made different lifestyle choices,&#8221; said Prof Charles Marshall, from Queen Mary University London. He added that most of an individual&#8217;s risk of developing dementia is outside their control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Samantha Benham-Hermetz, from Alzheimer\u2019s Research UK, described the report\u2019s findings as \u201cgroundbreaking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">\u201cMany people think of dementia as something that happens to people later in life, but dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c84jdxd4x1ro\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some factors are more of a risk than others, the report suggests.
