Evacuation orders\u00a0issued by the Israeli military have\u00a0impacted\u00a0Nuseirat and Bureij refugee camps, forcing families to\u00a0relocate \u201cagain and again, knowing that safety is non-existent in the Gaza Strip\u201d, said the UN agency assisting Palestine refugees, UNRWA, in a post on X.<\/p>\n
More than nine months into the war in Gaza,\u00a0only 14 per cent of the enclave\u00a0has not been\u00a0impacted\u00a0by evacuation orders<\/strong>,\u00a0said\u00a0UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cQuite often, people have just a few hours to pack whatever they can\u00a0and\u00a0start all over again, mostly on foot or on a crowded donkey cart for those who can afford it,\u201d he said. \u201cAlmost everyone in Gaza has been\u00a0impacted by these orders. Many were forced to flee on average once a month since the war began nine months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n In a related development, the\u00a0UN\u00a0agency condemned the reported destruction of a water plant in Rafah in southern Gaza,\u00a0a focus of\u00a0Israeli\u00a0military action since early May.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAny time, something happens –\u00a0like what appears to happen in Rafah over the weekend, with a water plant destroyed –\u00a0it impacts the ability we have to generate water,\u201d said\u00a0Scott Anderson,\u00a0UN\u00a0Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator and Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza.\u00a0The UN agency has been unable to independently assess the situation, he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n Echoing\u00a0the\u00a0testimonies\u00a0of\u00a0forcibly\u00a0displaced people who are among those\u00a0assisted by\u00a0UNRWA, Mr. Anderson\u00a0recounted\u00a0how one woman\u00a0with\u00a0twins explained the chaos of the upheaval: \u201cShe said, yeah, basically, that was one child for each arm and a little backpack, you know, and off they go to try to find safety.\u201d<\/p>\n According to UNRWA, evacuation orders\u00a0are now issued \u201cevery other day\u201d, while\u00a0UN\u00a0aid coordination office,\u00a0OCHA, reported\u00a0on Friday that\u00a0humanitarian partners\u00a0estimated that more than 190,000 Palestinians\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0displaced\u00a0last week\u00a0in Khan Younis and Deir al Balah, since\u00a0an\u00a0evacuation order issued seven days ago.<\/p>\n Recent evacuation orders and intense hostilities have\u00a0continued\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0destabilize aid operations and hampered efforts to provide critical relief to civilians in Khan Younis,\u00a0<\/strong>OCHA\u00a0insisted.\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u00a0maintained that\u00a0ongoing insecurity and the designation of\u00a0\u201conly one access point for the entry and exit of humanitarian staff into and out of Gaza \u2013 the Kerem Shalom crossing \u2013 have hampered efforts to deploy additional emergency medical teams in Gaza\u201d \u2013 even though\u00a0these\u00a0workers are critically needed<\/strong> to help support<\/strong> the<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cexhausted\u201d local health force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI met a mother and a child, a two-month-old who was starving to death and the mother didn’t have sufficient nutrition to lactate and feed her baby,\u201d Mr. Anderson said in an interview with\u00a0UN News<\/em>.<\/p>\n He\u00a0explained\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cwhen you get to severe malnutrition or acute malnutrition, you\u00a0can’t just give milk or food and the baby will recover. You know, for a mother to start lactation again is\u00a0nearly impossible\u2026And\u00a0they look at you and say, \u2018What can you do to help me?<\/strong>\u2019<\/p>\n Latest UN data\u00a0indicates that\u00a093 per cent of schools\u00a0in Gaza\u00a0have been\u00a0damaged and many\u00a0have been\u00a0directly\u00a0hit. A third of the affected schools are UNRWA schools,\u00a0whose approximately 14,000 teachers\u00a0used to\u00a0teach\u00a0around\u00a0370,000 students.\u00a0<\/p>\n To\u00a0help the\u00a0hundreds of thousands of\u00a0children\u00a0now\u00a0out of school in the enclave, UNRWA and the UN Children\u2019s Fund, UNICEF, plan to\u00a0provide an education boost beginning Thursday 1 August.<\/p>\nWater plant\u00a0destroyed<\/strong><\/h2>\n
