At the opening of a wide-ranging address to the UN General Assembly, President Biden said that amid countless upheavals the world had witnessed over the past year \u2013 from extreme weather events to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and rolling food and fuel shortages \u2013 \u201ca permanent member of the United Nations Security Council invaded his neighbor … attempted to erase a sovereign State from the map.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cRussia,\u201d he continued, \u201chas shamelessly violated the core tenets of the United Nations Charter … and \u201cjust today [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has made overt nuclear threats against Europe in reckless disregard of the global non-proliferation regime.\u201d Mr. Biden also said Russia was \u201cright now\u201d calling up more soldiers and preparing a \u201csham\u201d referendum on the annexation of lands it already occupied in eastern Ukraine. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Brutal, senseless war\u2019<\/h2>\n
\u201cThe world should see these acts for what they are \u2026 no one has threatened Russia. Russia sought this conflict. One man sought this brutal, senseless war,\u201d the US President said: \u201cThis war is about extinguishing Ukraine\u2019s right to exist as a State, plain and simple, and [Ukrainian\u2019s] right to exist as a people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWherever you are, wherever you live, whatever you believe\u2026 That should make your blood run cold,\u201d he continued, adding that the General Assembly had condemned Russia\u2019s aggression \u201cand over 40 countries in this room today\u201d were contributing billions to support Ukraine. Mr, Biden said that his country had warned about the invasion and worked hard to avert war. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cLike many of you, the US wants this war to end and end on just terms,\u201d and urged UN Member States to be \u201cclear and unwavering in your resolve\u201d to uphold the tenets of the Charter that Ukraine has the same rights as any other sovereign nation. \u201cWe stand in solidarity against Russia\u2019s aggression, period…you cannot seize another country\u2019s territory by force. The only country doing that is Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Expand democracy and human rights to \u2018win the future\u2019<\/h2>\n
President Biden went on to say that the US would continue to champion and defend democracy around the world because he believed democracy to be \u201cthe greatest instrument to address the challenges of our time\u201d and he would work within the G7 and with other like-minded countries \u201cto prove that democracies can deliver for their citizens and deliver for the world.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
But he warned that even as the General Assembly was meeting \u201cthe UN Charter, the very basis of stable international order is under attack by those who wish to tear it down or distort it for their own advantage.\u201d As such, the US would continue standing up for the principles of the UN. \u201cThis is the responsibility of every Member State.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
