{"id":3406,"date":"2022-09-13T14:18:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T14:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/catastrophic-hunger-levels-leave-500000-children-at-risk-of-dying-in-somalia\/"},"modified":"2022-09-13T14:18:29","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T14:18:29","slug":"catastrophic-hunger-levels-leave-500000-children-at-risk-of-dying-in-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=3406","title":{"rendered":"Catastrophic hunger levels leave 500,000 children at risk of dying in Somalia |"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In a call for immediate funding to help vulnerable communities hit by successive droughts, high food prices and conflict, the UN Children\u2019s Fund UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stressed that the emergency shows no signs of letting up.<\/p>\n<p>Without action, famine \u201c<strong>will occur within the next few weeks<\/strong>\u201d, FAO said.<\/p>\n<p>The UN agency added that drought-related deaths \u201chave been occurring\u201d and the toll could be much higher in hard-to-reach rural areas, compared with the number recorded in camps for displaced families.<\/p>\n<h2>A \u2018nightmare\u2019 not seen this century<\/h2>\n<p>During the famine of 2011, 340,000 children required treatment for severe acute malnutrition, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder told journalists in Geneva. \u201cToday it\u2019s 513,000,\u201d he added. \u201c<strong>It\u2019s a pending nightmare we have not seen this century<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to FAO, approximately 6.7 million people across Somalia will likely endure high levels of acute food insecurity between October and December this year (IPC Phase 3 or above).<\/p>\n<p>This includes <strong>more than 300,000 who have been left \u201cempty-handed\u201d by the country\u2019s triple emergency<\/strong> and who are expected to fall into famine (IPC Phase 5).<\/p>\n<h2>Livestock dropping dead<\/h2>\n<p>In pastoral communities where herders have been desperately searching for pasture, \u201cthey are now watching their livestock drop dead like flies\u201d, said Etienne Peterschmitt, FAO Representative in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>The perilous situation of those forced from their homes by hunger in Baidoa town of Bay region in Southern Somalia, is particularly concerning, Mr. Peterschmitt added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe repeated warnings have been clear: act now or a famine will occur within the next few weeks,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drought situation is <strong>spreading at an alarming rate<\/strong>; more districts and regions are facing emergency levels of food insecurity as the cumulative effects of multiple failed rainy seasons take their toll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a call for radical change to stop famine happening again, UNICEF\u2019s Mr. Elder described the disturbing scenes already playing out in Somalia\u2019s worst-affected region.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dnd-widget-wrapper context-un_news_full_width type-image\">\n<div class=\"dnd-atom-rendered\"><!-- scald=781401:un_news_full_width -->\n          <picture>\n          <!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;\"><![endif]--><source srcset=\"\" media=\"(max-width : 992px)\"><source srcset=\"\" media=\"(max-width : 480px)\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/UNHCR\/Embargoed+2\/28-03-2022_UNPHOTO_Somalia.jpg\/image770x420cropped.jpg\" media=\"(max-width : 768px)\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/UNHCR\/Embargoed+2\/28-03-2022_UNPHOTO_Somalia.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" media=\"(max-width : 1200px) \"><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><br \/>\n          <br \/>\n          <\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n<p><span class=\"un-news-full-width scald-credit\">UN Photo \/ Fardosa Hussein<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"un-news-full-width scald-caption\">Somalia is facing the risk of an unprecedented famine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- END scald=781401 --><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Everyday bugs now deadly<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cChildren are already dying,\u201d he said. \u201cOur <strong>partners report that some stabilization centres are in fact full and critically-ill children are receiving treatment on the floor<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With greater funding, more severe and acutely malnourished children can be given lifesaving food which will make them strong enough to ward off diseases, just like healthier youngsters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just about nutrition, severely malnourished children are in fact <strong>up to 11 times more likely to die from things like diarrhoea and measles than well-nourished boys and girls<\/strong>,\u201d Mr. Elder said, adding that both diseases \u201care spiking\u201d in the worst-hit areas.<\/p>\n<p>The UN\u2019s response involves reaching the most vulnerable communities to prevent mass displacement before famine has been declared, to help to promote a faster recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian assistance has been increasing and reached an average of 3.1 million people per month between April and June 2022 and 4.5 million people per month between July and September 2022, according to FAO\u2019s Mr. Peterschmitt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the deaths, half of the deaths of 2011, happened before the declaration of famine,\u201d said El-Khidir Daloum, WFP Somalia Representative and Country Director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we speak right now, <strong>we are heading to 15 areas classified as hard-to-reach<\/strong> and we are scaling up together with UNICEF, the nutrition and the priority areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June, UNICEF reported that 386,000 children aged six to 59 months needed treatment for severe acute malnutrition. \u201cThat\u2019s increased (today) to more than half a million, to 513,000; that\u2019s a 33 per cent increase.
