LONDON<\/strong><\/p>\nFrom the national anthem to notes, coins, stamps, postboxes and passports: many aspects of life in Britain and beyond will change with the accession of Charles to the throne.<\/p>\n
The demise of Queen Elizabeth II means changes to the names of institutions throughout Britain and the wider Commonwealth realms.<\/p>\n
Currency, coins to change in several countries<\/strong><\/p>\nMeanwhile, her effigy on currency and cypher on insignia will also be replaced with those of the new king.<\/p>\n
The effigy of the new monarch will start to appear on coins and banknotes in Britain and around the world.<\/p>\n
It appears on several currencies, including the obverse of coins of the East Caribbean dollar, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n
The British crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man all produce their own sterling, as do the overseas territories of Gibraltar, St. Helena and the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n
In 1936, during the 326-day reign of king Edward VIII, trial coins were struck but he abdicated before coins for public circulation were minted.<\/p>\n
All British stamps feature the monarch\u2019s head, like the coins, facing the other way from the previous sovereign.<\/p>\n
Royal cypher to be replaced<\/strong><\/p>\nThe EIIR royal cypher, for Elizabeth II Regina, will have to change on new postboxes.<\/p>\n
The insignia on police helmets will likewise change.<\/p>\n
National anthem, official toast to be updated<\/strong><\/p>\nBritain\u2019s national anthem switches to \u201cGod Save the King\u201d, with male-version lyrics that may initially catch many people out as they have not been sung since 1952.<\/p>\n
It is also a national anthem in New Zealand and the royal anthem in Australia and Canada.<\/p>\n
The wording on the inside cover of British passports will have to be updated, as they are issued in the name of the crown.<\/p>\n
They read: \u201cHer Britannic Majesty\u2019s Secretary of State Requests and requires in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Similar text appears inside Australian, Canadian and New Zealand passports.<\/p>\n
The loyal toast to the head of state, said at formal gatherings, changes from simply \u201cThe Queen\u201d to \u201cThe King\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the Channel Islands, the unofficial toast of \u201cLa reine, notre duc\u201d \u2013 said in French and toasting the monarch as the duke of Normandy \u2013 changes to \u201cle roi, notre duc\u201d.<\/p>\n
The names of Her Majesty\u2019s government, Treasury and Customs and Excise will have to change.<\/p>\n
The state opening of parliament will feature the king\u2019s speech from the throne, outlining the government\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n
Military, security and law routines to change<\/strong><\/p>\nIn the military, new recruits will no longer metaphorically take the queen\u2019s shilling to sign up, adhere to the queen\u2019s regulations once in the ranks or board one of Her Majesty\u2019s ships.<\/p>\n
The Queen\u2019s Guard, typically seen posted outside Buckingham Palace, changes its name.<\/p>\n
The police will no longer be preserving the queen\u2019s peace.<\/p>\n
In law, senior lawyers will change from being a QC (Queen\u2019s Counsel) to a KC, while the Queen\u2019s Bench Division of the High Court also reverts to the king.<\/p>\n
Suspects who admit guilt and testify against their accomplices in return for a lenient sentence will be turning king\u2019s evidence rather than turning the queen\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Prisoners initially may be relieved to learn they are no longer being detained at Her Majesty\u2019s pleasure but any joy will be short-lived as they continue their jail terms at His Majesty\u2019s pleasure instead.<\/p>\n
Her Majesty\u2019s Theatre in London\u2019s West End, where \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera\u201d has been running since 1986, will revert to becoming His Majesty\u2019s.<\/p>\n
And speakers of Received Pronunciation, the poshest and most socially prestigious accent, will have to aspire to Charles\u2019s vowels and diphthongs once the Queen\u2019s English becomes the King\u2019s English.<\/p>\n
However, the Queen\u2019s English itself changed over time. Comparisons of Queen Elizabeth\u2019s earlier speeches with ones decades later showed that her accent became less plummy over time.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
