Corleone decides to hand over his empire to his youngest son Michael, played by Al Pacino. However, his decision puts the lives of his loved ones in grave danger.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"THE GODFATHER | 50th Anniversary Trailer | Paramount Pictures\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UaVTIH8mujA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Scroll down for Arab critics\u2019 ratings of the Middle East\u2019s remakes of the cult Mafia classic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nNot only was the movie influential in the West, but it also inspired filmmakers and production houses in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn 2015, the late Syrian director Hatem Ali created an Arabic version of \u201cThe Godfather\u201d for TV called \u201cAl-Arrab\u201d and even borrowed the US film\u2019s iconic logo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThe two-part series, \u201cAl-Arrab: Taht Al-Hezam\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cAl-Arrab:\u00a0Nady\u00a0Al-Sharq,\u201d\u00a0starred Jamal Soliman, Bassem Yakhour, Basel Khayat and Amel Bouchoucha, but was it any good?<\/p>\n<p>\nEssam Zakaria, an Egyptian critic and artistic director of the Alexandria Film Festival for Mediterranean Cinema, thinks not, describing it as \u201can inferior production. The story and the details are not convincing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"\u0628\u0631\u0648\u0645\u0648 \u0645\u0633\u0644\u0633\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0627\u0628 2 - \u062a\u062d\u062a \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0632\u0627\u0645 - \u0631\u0645\u0636\u0627\u0646 2016 Al Arrab Promo\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yOxVSGpXRic?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to Saudi film critic and actor Baraa Alem,\u00a0one of the reasons some remakes are unsuccessful is because they lack the cultural references of the productions on which they are based.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWhen you take something that is internationally acclaimed \u2026 you cannot just expect me to forget about it totally and re-receive the story from your end as a new story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cYou talk about \u2018The Godfather\u2019 and we remember Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, and whoever you are going to put in that place is never going to have the same emotional load that we have for these characters. You can take the theme and remake it, but you cannot take the cultural aspect. That\u2019s why I find that it is so hard for a remake to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nLebanese critic and writer Jamal Fayad said the challenge was in changing the production from a movie to a TV show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe difficulty in transforming a movie into a series of 30 episodes is making the script not boring,\u201d Fayad told Arab News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe can take a movie and remake it into a movie; a series and make it a series,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut, for us to change a movie and make it a series, it will lose a lot of the joy in the script because the writer will be forced to elongate the scenes. He will reach a point where he will create new scenes and that might spoil the production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe production was good and the actors are all veteran stars from Jamal Soliman to all the actors with him,\u201d Fayad said. \u201cI find that director Hatem Ali, peace be upon him, was amazing. He was always exceptional.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThat same year, \u201cThe Godfather\u201d was turned into another Arabic series \u2014 also called \u201cAl-Arrab\u201d \u2014 starring Salloum Haddad, Assi El-Hallani and Mustafa El-Khani and directed by Syrian filmmaker Muthanna Sobh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Al Arrab Promo | \u0628\u0631\u0648\u0645\u0648 \u0645\u0633\u0644\u0633\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0627\u0628\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t0xu92cm6M0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIn both \u2018Al-Arrab\u2019 parts that were done, the story expanded and that is not recommended in drama. It\u2019s either we get the same writer and he\/she can stretch out the story in his way or we don\u2019t remake the movie into a series,\u201d Fayad said.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnother work inspired by \u201cThe Godfather\u201d is the 1991 Egyptian film \u201cAssr El-Qowa,\u201d directed by Nader Galal and starring Egyptian icon Nadia Al-Gendy. But Zakaria described that as \u201cnot good at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cBoth (the 2015 series and the 1991 film) don\u2019t live up \u2014 in any way \u2014 to one of the parts of the original production,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen speaking with Arab News about \u201cAssr El-Qowa,\u201d Fayad countered and said that he is a fan of Al-Gendy and her work.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe best thing about Nadia Al-Gendy is that she found a place for herself in the industry that made her the most successful,\u201d he said. \u201cIn all her works, she portrayed strong women that can stand against men. Despite that, she never repeated her characters and always portrayed new roles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Context matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nThe critics agreed that context matters when it comes to remaking international classics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nZakaria, who is also an instructor at the film department of the American University in Cairo, told Arab News that remakes can only succeed if their creators add \u201csomething that will touch the society\u201d they are based on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThey find a successful American or Western movie and they want to steal its success, but they don\u2019t always have something to add,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWriting is the hardest part of the production. So they cut this step short, which is considered the most important, and start working after the writing process. This is laziness sometimes (and) not putting enough effort to look for regional ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nZakaria said a rare example of a successful transition into Arabic was the Egyptian film \u201cOm El-Arousa,\u201d based on the 1950 US film \u201cFather of the Bride.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWhen they transformed it, it became like an original Egyptian movie,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the team doing the remake are creative, skilled, have ideas and a vision, it will be good. But, if it is done out of laziness just to do a movie or a series, the result is the inferior productions that we see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"\u0645\u0646\u0639\u0637\u0641 \u062e\u0637\u0631 | \u0625\u0639\u0644\u0627\u0646 \u0645\u0633\u0644\u0633\u0644 \u0645\u0646\u0639\u0637\u0641 \u062e\u0637\u0631 | \u0634\u0627\u0647\u062f VIP\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vZfLkIK0vdw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, the most recent Arabic-language remake \u2014 Shahid\u2019s \u201cThe Killing,\u201d based on the hit Danish police show of the same name \u2014 has also received a warm welcome on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nSet in Cairo, the show, which stars Syrian Bassel Khayat and Egyptians Riham Abdel Ghafour, Bassem Samra and Salma Abu-Deif, follows a police investigation into the murder of a young girl.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Remakes versus original story telling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWhile it is understandable that studios in the Middle East might be drawn to remaking films that have already been successful elsewhere, industry insiders largely agree that original story telling is the way forward.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cI always encourage my friends who write and the writers around me in the Arab world to look for new ideas and find original content that could come from our culture because we have a lot of stories that are not told yet,\u201d Alem said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe have heritage and stories. We also have imagination and we have the ability to fantasize and create new worlds and new characters \u2026 not just depend on the success of things that were done in the West,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\nFayad walks a middle line, declaring remakes can work if writers take the general idea of the story and built it into something original.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIn this case, we build on the idea with a new script, a new story and new scenes. This is more successful and more convincing,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Critics get candid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWe asked the critics to rate the Arab remakes out of 10 to help you decide if they are worth watching.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>\u201cAl-Arrab: Taht Al-Hezam\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cAl-Arrab:\u00a0Nady\u00a0Al-Sharq\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nCritics rating: 5\/10<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"\u0628\u0631\u0648\u0645\u0648 \u0645\u0633\u0644\u0633\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0627\u0628 2 -
