LONDON<\/strong><\/p>\nBritain\u2019s Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has won the Tory leadership race, the Conservative Party\u2019s 1922 Committee announced on Monday.<\/p>\n
Truss, 46, received votes from 81,326 of the party members, whereas her rival contender Rishi Sunak received 60,399 votes, the committee chairman Sir Graham Brady announced.<\/p>\n
Truss will replace Boris Johnson as the country\u2019s new prime minister and she is to become the third female prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.<\/p>\n
Truss is expected to receive the duty of forming a new government from Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
In her victory speech, Truss thanked her supporters as well as her rival Sunak, saying the campaign showed the \u201cbreadth and depth of talent in the Conservative Party.\u201d<\/p>\n
She then paid tribute to the outgoing premier, \u201cmy friend Boris Johnson,\u201d who was pressured out of the leadership amid a series of scandals.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoris, you got Brexit done. You crushed (former Labour Party leader) Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the (COVID-19) vaccine. And you stood up to (Russian President) Vladimir Putin. You were admired from Kyiv to Carlisle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Truss\u2019 to-do list<\/strong><\/p>\nShe then turned her attention to her party, saying: \u201cFriends and colleagues, thank you for putting your faith in me to lead our great Conservative Party, the greatest political party on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring this leadership campaign, I campaigned as a Conservative and I will govern as a conservative,\u201d Truss said, before listing her priorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people\u2019s energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. And I will deliver on the National Health Service.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued: \u201cBut we all will deliver for our country. And I will make sure that we use all the fantastic talents of the Conservative party, our brilliant members of parliament and peers, our fantastic counselors \u2026 all of our councilors and activists and members right across our country. Because, my friends, I know that we will deliver, we will deliver and we will deliver. And we will deliver a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n
The expected date of the next British general election is sometime in 2024.<\/p>\n
Conservatives close ranks<\/strong><\/p>\nIn a statement, Johnson said: \u201cI have been proud to serve as leader of the Conservative Party for the last three years, winning the biggest majority for decades, getting Brexit done, overseeing the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe and giving vital support to Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\u201cCongratulations to Liz Truss on her decisive win. I know she has the right plan to tackle the cost of living crisis, unite our party and continue the great work of uniting and levelling up our country. Now is the time for all Conservatives to get behind her 100 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Truss\u2019 other Conservative predecessors also congratulated her.<\/p>\n
Johnson\u2019s predecessor Theresa May tweeted: \u201cCongratulation Liz Truss. We Conservatives must now work together to address the challenges facing our country. Tackling the cost of living, delivering for those in need & managing the public finances responsibly. I look forward to supporting the government in that task.\u201d<\/p>\n
May\u2019s predecessor David Cameron also tweeted: \u201cMany congratulations to new PM Liz Truss. At this time of challenge & global uncertainty, I wish the new government well. I never forget the support I had from all former Conservative leaders when I won the ballot in 2005 & I hope all Conservatives will unite behind the new PM.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for Sunak, he echoed the prevailing sentiment within the party of closing ranks behind the new leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you to everyone who voted for me in this campaign. I\u2019ve said throughout that the Conservatives are one family. It\u2019s right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n
Labour calls new premier \u2018out of touch\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nThen came the opposition\u2019s turn to weigh in with their views on the new prime minister.<\/p>\n
Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition, center-left Labour Party, called Truss \u201cout of touch\u201d with working people.<\/p>\n
He told local reporters that while Truss spoke at length about tax cuts, she did not speak as much about the cost of living crisis.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe needs to deal with the fact the NHS is on its knees. She needs to deal with the collapse of law and order and that can be no justification for not freezing energy prices,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a political consensus that needs to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later, Starmer tweeted: \u201cI\u2019d like to congratulate our next Prime Minister Liz Truss as she prepares for office. But after 12 years of the Tories (Conservatives) all we have to show for it is low wages, high prices, and a Tory cost of living crisis. Only Labour can deliver the fresh start our country needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ed Davey, leader of the small centrist Liberal Democrats, said: \u201cUnder Liz Truss, we\u2019re set to see more of the same crisis and chaos as under Boris Johnson. From the cost of living emergency to the NHS crisis, the Conservatives have shown they don\u2019t care, and have no plan.\u201d<\/p>\n
Northern Ireland, Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\nSir Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the pro-union Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, used his statement congratulating Truss to press home unionist demands over the Northern Ireland protocol, a section of the UK-EU Brexit deal they oppose as they believe it undermines their place in the UK.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe congratulate Liz Truss on this achievement. We have already requested an early meeting with the new Prime Minister to address the challenges in Northern Ireland both with the Protocol and our approach to energy and food security,\u201d Donaldson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo address the cost-of-living crisis in Northern Ireland, the Government must replace the Northern Ireland Protocol with arrangements which restore our place in the United Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Scottish National Party, which is pushing for a second Scottish independence referendum to secede from the UK, said Truss was on course to be \u201ceven worse than Boris Johnson.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scottish First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: \u201cCongratulations to Liz Truss. Our political differences are deep, but I will seek to build a good working relationship with her as I did with last 3 PMs. She must now freeze energy bills for people & businesses, deliver more cash support, and increase funding for public services.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
