MOSCOW<\/strong><\/p>\nThe leader of Myanmar\u2019s military junta will travel to Russia next week for economic talks, state media in the Southeast Asian nation reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Min Aung Hlaing\u2019s visit comes as both governments face diplomatic isolation \u2014 Moscow for its February invasion of Ukraine, and Naypyidaw for a military coup last year.<\/p>\n
He will attend the Eastern Economic Forum in the far-eastern city of Vladivostok, The Global New Light of Myanmar said.<\/p>\n
Representatives from China, India, Japan, Kazakhstan and other countries will also attend.<\/p>\n
The general will hold talks with Russian government officials to \u201cfurther cement the cooperation\u201d and friendly ties between the two countries economies and governments, the report said.<\/p>\n
Since the putsch that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s civilian government in February last year, Myanmar has faced Western sanctions and a downgrade in relations.<\/p>\n
Min Aung Hlaing is unlikely to be invited to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders\u2019 summit in Phnom Penh in November, with the bloc frustrated over a lack of progress on resolving the country\u2019s political crisis.<\/p>\n
Myanmar has been in chaos and its economy paralyzed as the military regime struggles to crush resistance.<\/p>\n
More than 2,200 people have been killed in the crackdown, according to a local monitor.<\/p>\n
Russia, meanwhile, is under a variety of international sanctions after its February invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Since then, Myanmar\u2019s ruling generals have sought to deepen ties with major ally and arms supplier Moscow \u2014 whose invasion the junta has said was \u201cjustified.\u201d<\/p>\n
The junta chief undertook a \u201cprivate visit\u201d to Moscow in July, where he reportedly met officials from Moscow\u2019s space agency Roscosmos and nuclear agencies, while second in command Soe Win also visited Russia late last month.<\/p>\n
During a trip to Naypyidaw in early August, Russia\u2019s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov backed the junta\u2019s efforts to \u201cstabilize\u201d the country and hold a national poll next year.<\/p>\n
But US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned the international community to reject the junta\u2019s \u201csham elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
