Nancy Davis, who is 15 weeks pregnant, says she plans to travel out of state for a \u2018medically necessary\u2019 abortion.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A pregnant Louisiana woman who was denied an abortion \u2014 even though her fetus has a rare and fatal condition \u2014 has demanded that Governor John Bel Edwards and the legislature call a special session to clarify the state\u2019s restrictions on the procedure.<\/p>\n Nancy Davis, who is 15 weeks pregnant, said on Friday that she will travel out of state next week for a \u201cmedically necessary\u201d abortion.<\/p>\n A state law currently in effect bans all abortions except if there is substantial risk of death or impairment to the woman if she continues her pregnancy and in the case of \u201cmedically futile\u201d pregnancies. Davis, 36, and abortion-rights advocates for months have criticised the legislation as vague and confusing.<\/p>\n Their concerns are being echoed in numerous other states that, like Louisiana, passed so-called trigger laws when the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision guaranteeing a constitutional right to abortion.<\/p>\n Roughly a dozen states currently ban abortions at all stages of pregnancy, with some allowing for narrow exceptions such as in cases of rape, incest or when the pregnant woman\u2019s life is in danger.<\/p>\n \u201cMs Davis was among the first women to be caught in the crosshairs of confusion due to Louisiana\u2019s rush to restrict abortion, but she will hardly be the last,\u201d Ben Crump, a lawyer for Davis, said during a news conference held on the state\u2019s Capitol steps on Friday.<\/p>\n Many women with heartbreaking pregnancy situations are left conflicted on how to act under Louisiana’s unclear abortion laws.
