{"id":1951,"date":"2022-08-25T12:42:30","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T12:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/level-of-top-gcse-grades-drop-as-schools-return-to-exams\/"},"modified":"2022-08-25T12:42:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T12:42:30","slug":"level-of-top-gcse-grades-drop-as-schools-return-to-exams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=1951","title":{"rendered":"Level of top GCSE grades drop as schools return to exams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-attribute=\"article-content-body\">\n<p>The level of top GCSE grades awarded in England, Wales and Northern Ireland fell this year, as schools and colleges returned to a system of formal examinations after two years of pandemic disruption.<\/p>\n<p>About 26.3 per cent of GCSEs \u2014 national exams taken by 16-year-olds \u2014 achieved a 7 or above this year, equivalent to an A-A* in the old system, according to results released on Thursday by the Joint Council for Qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>This was slightly lower than the record 28.9 per cent last year when exams were replaced with teacher assessments, but significantly higher than the 20.8 per cent in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>The drop reflects government plans to gradually return to a normal system of grading, with marks set at a \u201cmidpoint\u201d between pre-pandemic levels and the record highs of last year.<\/p>\n<p>The results also highlighted the gap between the performance of children from different economic backgrounds and UK regions. <\/p>\n<p>Attainment improved in all regions compared with 2019, according to analysis by English exam regulator Ofqual. This is most likely due to being offline or JavaScript being disabled in your browser.\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><source media=\"screen and (max-width: 490px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fpublic.flourish.studio%2Fstory%2F1665968%2Fthumbnail%3FcacheBuster%3D?dpr=1&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;source=next&amp;width=490\" data-original-image-width=\"1020\" data-original-image-height=\"1303\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/source><\/picture>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jon Andrews, head of analysis at the Education Policy Institute think-tank, accepted that the disparity reflected long-term trends as well as a pandemic effect. \u201cThe government must do more to combat geographic inequalities,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Shane Richardson, headteacher of Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent, said pupils there had faced \u201cmass uncertainty\u201d with local Covid-19 infection rates three times the national average at certain points during the pandemic. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real message is about what the kids did and the profound resilience that they demonstrated,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>At Shrewsbury High School, an independent girls\u2019 school in the Midlands, pupil Harriet Underhill said it \u201cfelt like a relief\u201d to achieve a clutch of level 8 grades after an uncertain two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still did lessons all the way through so we didn\u2019t really miss out on anything,\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. [but] I\u2019ve got friends who didn\u2019t do online learning at all,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>The data highlighted a gender disparity with 30 per cent of female entries at 7 or above, compared with 22.6 per cent of males.<\/p>\n<p>Jo Saxton, chief regulator of Ofqual, said students strongly supported the return of exams as a chance to \u201cprove themselves\u201d in a \u201ctried and tested way\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>To compensate for the education disruption because of the pandemic, students were given special support this year in the form of fewer assessment topics and additional exam materials. <\/p>\n<p>This year, about 73.2 per cent of grades were a 4 and above, equivalent to a C or more in the old system, compared with 67.3 per cent in 2019 and 77.1 per cent last year. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, thousands of students were at risk of not receiving their Btec vocational qualifications on Thursday after exam board Pearson said about 7,000 pupils had been affected. The admission came after thousands of higher-level Btec results were delayed last week.<\/p>\n<p>Grammar and private schools achieved the highest grades overall.
