{"id":1945,"date":"2022-08-25T12:26:08","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T12:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/rohingya-call-for-safe-return-home-5-years-after-myanmar-exodus-news\/"},"modified":"2022-08-25T12:58:31","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T12:58:31","slug":"rohingya-call-for-safe-return-home-5-years-after-myanmar-exodus-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=1945","title":{"rendered":"Rohingya call for safe return home, 5 years after Myanmar exodus | News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bangladesh \u2013<\/strong> Rohingya people cannot be guaranteed safety in Myanmar, advocates say, where the government has been accused of decades of abuse that has left the long-persecuted ethnic minority largely stateless.<\/p>\n<p>For the nearly one million Rohingya living in the world\u2019s largest refugee settlement in neighbouring Bangladesh, conditions are squalid and what limited opportunities existed have slowly disappeared, rights groups and residents said.<\/p>\n<p>On the fifth anniversary of Myanmar\u2019s military operation that forced more than 740,000 Rohingya to flee the country, the dilemma of being unable to return home while struggling to survive in Bangladesh looms large for refugees in these labyrinth camps of tarpaulin and bamboo crowded together on terraced hills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had enough, we want to go back to home to Myanmar soon,\u201d Azra Khatun told Al Jazeera from the Balukhali refugee camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that our children can get some education and have a normal and decent life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Rohingya refugees and their quest for justice\" src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/essential-middle-east\/rohingya-refugees-and-their-quest-for-justice\/embed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Two of Khatun\u2019s three children were born in Bangladesh after she fled the 2017 military onslaught \u2013 a campaign that a United Nations fact-finding mission has said included mass murders of Rohingya civilians, gang rapes, and forced expulsions.<\/p>\n<p>The violence indicated \u201cgenocidal intent\u201d, the UN said, a finding that authorities in Myanmar have rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Khatun\u2019s children are also some of the 30,000 Rohingya babies born to the refugees each year in Bangladesh, according to Bangladeshi officials, a number that underscores the continued humanitarian demands of a refugee situation now defined as a \u201cprolonged crisis\u201d by the UN.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1833214\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 770px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1833214\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1833214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Refugees have called for their return to Myanmar and the granting of rights and security when they do [Sulayman Hossain\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bangladesh government has become increasingly inhospitable to Rohingya refugees, advocates say, a situation that is being made worse by the country\u2019s flagging economy, which has staggered under sky-high inflation and a cost of living crisis following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.<\/p>\n<p>Barbed-wire fences have been erected around the camps to limit the movement of refugees, and the refugees remain banned from most formal education, work and travel.<\/p>\n<p>Residents have also reported that harassment by camp authorities has become commonplace, as well as extortion and threats of detention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangladesh says it has done more than enough,\u201d mother-of-three Khatun said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for the UN and global community to assess the situation and try to resolve the problem soon,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1833334\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 770px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1833334\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-1833334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Myanmar-barbed-wire.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513\" alt=\"Rohingya\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1833334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A man crosses a barbed-wire fence at a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bangladesh [Sulyman Hossain\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A safe and dignified return to Myanmar remains a far-off hope for now.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Rohingya refugees have not been willing to take part in a formal repatriation scheme created by Bangladesh and Myanmar in November 2017 \u2013 just three months after the brutal military campaign began, according to the International Crisis Group. The refugees wanted more guarantees about their safety, citizenship rights, and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>During a recent trip to Bangladesh, UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said, \u201cThe current situation across the border means that the conditions are not right for returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sayeed Hossain was among a group of Rohingya refugees who met Bachelet during her visit to the camps on August 16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her we do want to return to Myanmar, but we don\u2019t want to face repression and prosecution again, and that needs to be ensured,\u201d he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe assured us that our demands will be presented accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Myanmar, the Rohingya continue to face marginalisation and violence, according to human rights groups. Restrictions on the community have included limits on their ability to move around, access education and work opportunities, and even to limit the number of children they could have.<\/p>\n<p>The Myanmar government has long maintained the Rohingya do not have ancestral ties to their homelands, but are instead the descendants of migrants from India and Bangladesh, a position challenged by historians.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1833216\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 770px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1833216\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-1833216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC02915.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513\" alt=\"Rohingya\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1833216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Men wait in line in a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bangladesh [Sulayman Hossain\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 600,000 members of the ethnic group remain in Myanmar, with about 130,000 of them living in internal displacement camps.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of repatriation from Bangladesh has been further complicated by the 2021 military coup and increased fighting between armed groups and Myanmar\u2019s military in Rakhine state, home to most of the country\u2019s Rohingya population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can hear artillery rounds and machine fire almost every day. Our children and families are in panic,\u201d Deen Mohammed, the camp leader of the only Rohingya camp located in the so-called no-man\u2019s land on the Myanmar-Bangladesh border, known to locals as Zero Point, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are unable to go to our own country still,\u201d Mohammed said, adding that the fighting is also \u201cgetting very close to our camp area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the humanitarian community faces a fund crunch made worse by the war in Ukraine, and of the $881m needed to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh through 2022, less than half has been funded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter five years, this is no longer the biggest crisis or the most covered crisis, so there are other situations in the world,\u201d Regina de la Portilla, a UN refugee agency spokeswoman, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to find the funding for the Rohingya to continue living at least with a minimum standards,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the main challenge is providing the support for them to survive on a day-to-day basis, the humanitarian needs are covered, but also moving towards what is going to happen next,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Rohingya crisis five years on | Al Jazeera Newsfeed\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BOjVLPO8MIE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the centre of these challenges, many Rohingya say they feel left out of the process of finding solutions to their plight.<\/p>\n<p>Jamalida Begum was also among the refugees to meet Bachelet during her visit.
