Australian Federal Police say they\u2019ve seized more than 5 million doses of fentanyl, the largest shipment of the opioid the country has ever seen.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E8D79CEF-96DD-7E62-8EC5-C4704E43F600@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Police said the drugs were hidden in an industrial machine, known as a lathe, that arrived at the Port of Melbourne in December 2021 from Canada.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_82A24163-B9A8-6CD7-BE5B-C4704E47406F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      But they didn\u2019t launch an investigation until February, when Australian Border Force officials found the drug stash, which included 11.2 kilograms of pure fentanyl and 30 kilograms of methamphetamine.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A6CBB3B1-A53E-B2DF-7717-C48643CA6602@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Fentanyl is a highly addictive painkiller 50-100 times more potent than morphine.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_328B74F0-DE16-6A5C-7A6B-C48B68D7F4A6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cIt is highly unusual to find this drug in Australia outside from its use for medical purposes,\u201d AFP acting Commander Anthony Hall said during a press conference Monday. \u201cThe seizure of 11 kg is cause for serious concern to the Australian community.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5F01BDEE-57B8-E348-42D8-C48B554E54B5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Previously, Australian authorities have only detected small shipments \u2013 30 grams or less \u2013 of fentanyl illegally imported into the country, according to an AFP press release.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6397E76B-74F4-2E57-D0DF-C4704E511247@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In Monday\u2019s press conference, ABF Commander James Watson emphasized the significance of the bust given the amount of fentanyl discovered.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5C1C7739-A736-4ECE-09ED-C4704E55393F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cTypically, we would only see fentanyl being detected in quantities of 1 g or less, so to have a detection that is 11 kg pure, is just quite frankly extraordinary,\u201d Watson said. \u201cI\u2019d describe it as a total act of bastardy.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      While fentanyl is primarily used for medical purposes in Australia, elsewhere it is often mixed with other drugs such as heroin with sometimes deadly consequences. In the United States, the growing prevalence of fentanyl has contributed to an increase in fatal overdoses.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_34DEF1B3-159C-CF0D-75F0-C4704E638037@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      When asked why the announcement was made now, months after the drugs were initially seized and identified, Hall said one of the main purposes was \u201cto alert the community to the harms of what fentanyl poses.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_534F722C-57D7-5ED9-C8E5-C4C41CA10421@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Authorities also want people who may have information about the source of the fentanyl to come forward.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E93CCAE2-7CB8-B000-B34A-C4C41CA94BCD@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cThere is someone out there in the community who does know more so we are appealing to that person or persons who are there to speak up and call crime stoppers please,\u201d Hall said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_64E01517-6847-8FBC-7304-C4704E675128@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Hall suggested organized crime was to blame for the large shipment of the drug but clarified that no arrests have been made.
