He was a composer, singer, instrumentalist, actor and film producer who released more than 220 original songs and acted in 31 musical films.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nHe earned his nickname for his extraordinary prowess on the Middle Eastern stringed instrument. His work includes numerous Arab music classics, including \u201cNora Ya Nora,\u201d \u201cAwel Hamsa\u201d and \u201cAlby w Mofatho.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\">\n<figcaption>\nFarid Al-Atrash pictured in the 1970s. (AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\nAl-Atrash was born on Oct. 19, 1910, to a Syrian father and Lebanese mother in Suwayda, Syria. He emigrated to Egypt with his mother and siblings \u2014\u00a0the legendary singer Asmahan (Amal Al-Atrash) and film producer Fouad Al-Atrash \u2014 to escape French occupation, as their family played a major role in the Syrian resistance movement. They later received Egyptian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Atrash\u2019s inspiration was his mother, Aliya Bent Al-Monthir, a singer and a musician, whose talent helped to provide for her family in Egypt. She pushed him to pursue an education in music at Egypt\u2019s\u00a0music conservatory. Al-Atrash always said his instructor Riad El-Sunbati was his true musical mentor. While studying at the conservatory, Al-Atrash sold textiles to help his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nHis professional career began when he met composer Farid Ghosn and Egyptian singer and actor Ibrahim Hamouda. He is a true icon \u2014 one of the three best musicians after Riad Al-Sunbati and Mohamed El-Qasabgi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nShamma believes that Al-Atrash helped to raised the public profile of the oud and its players.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cHe presented endings to his musical compositions that people would long for and applaud,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Atrash\u2019s big break as an actor came when he starred in the 1941 film \u201cIntisar Al-Shabab\u201d (Triumph of Youth) with his sister Asmahan. He composed all the songs for the movie.\u00a0He went on to star in some of the most beloved Arab movies of all time, including \u201cHabib El-Omr,\u201d \u201cLahn El-Kholoud,\u201d \u201cAfreeta Hanem,\u201d \u201cBolbol Afandy,\u201d \u201cResala Men Emraa\u2019 Maghoola\u201d and \u201cHekayet El-Omr Kolo.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Atrash\u2019s love affair with Egyptian actress and bellydancer Samia Gamal is one of the most famous romances in Arab pop-culture.\u00a0The couple never married because, according to Al-Atrash, marriage was like a death certificate for his emotions, which were the main inspiration for his admired music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Rabeeh Oud Taqsim - HQ - Farid El Atrache \u062a\u0642\u0627\u0633\u064a\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0628\u064a\u0639 - \u0635\u0648\u062a \u0639\u0627\u0644\u064a \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0648\u062f\u0629 \ud83c\udfa7\ud83d\udd0a - \u0641\u0631\u064a\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0637\u0631\u0634\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2iGl0cVwITo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nIn an interview with a Syrian TV channel, Al-Atrash said: \u201cI tried to get married multiple times in my life, but it was God\u2019s will to not build a family and have children. But, trust that I tried to find a wife, and I did.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cAn artist lives a life that is (not) an ordinary life,\u201d he explained to the host. \u201cMy life is full of adventures. I am not stable. I am here today, tomorrow I\u2019ll be in London. (I\u2019m busy) with trips, concerts, interviews, TV, radio\u2026 So what woman would be able to stand a husband that stays out all night and comes home early in the morning, sleeps all morning then goes for interviews and for work? (AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\nAs Al-Atrash\u2019s career went on, competition in the music industry increased, as renowned musicians including Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Mohammed Al-Mougui, Kamal Al-Taweel and Baligh Hamdi started to make their mark. However, Al-Atrash\u2019s star did not wane.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cDuring that time, Al-Atrash presented great songs like \u2018La Wa Ainaiki,\u2019 which (confirmed) the rise of a great musician and a top-notch composer. He was able to remain successful until his career ended,\u201d Shamma said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIf he wasn\u2019t a composer and a singer, he would probably have been an oud player at a completely different level,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut, he (only) gave part of his time to the oud \u2014 although this time was critical to Oriental music. Even today, he remains an inspiration to many students and oud lovers. Fareed\u2019s work could give them great exposure because he has so many fans in the Arab world.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cFarid Al-Atrash is an icon who can never be replaced. Not as an artist, a creative, a musician, a composer, nor as a person,\u201d Shamma continued. \u201cAs a person, he was amazing.
