{"id":104334,"date":"2026-10-22T04:52:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-22T04:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=104334"},"modified":"2026-10-22T04:52:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-22T04:52:00","slug":"arab-news-athr-gallery-promotes-saudi-artists-at-art-basel-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gulftimes.ae\/?p=104334","title":{"rendered":"Arab News | Athr Gallery promotes Saudi artists at Art Basel Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>DUBAI: Saudi Arabia&#8217;s ATHR Gallery will show works by six artists at the prestigious fair, running from Oct. 23-25. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohammad Alfaraj<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018The Storyteller\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>\u2018The Storyteller.\u2019 (Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEvery time we put together a booth (for an art fair), it feels less like curating and more like assembling fragments of a larger story, one that\u2019s been unfolding across generations of Saudi artists long before I was paying attention, and one I hope continues long after,\u201d Hamza Serafi, co-founder of Athr Gallery, which has branches in Jeddah, AlUla, and Riyadh, tells Arab News. \u201cThis year in Paris, that feeling is especially strong.\u201d The gallery will present work from six artists: Abdulrahman AlSoliman, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Mohammad Alfaraj, Sara Abdu, and Sarah Abu Abdallah from Saudi Arabia, and Rami Farook from the UAE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat strikes me most,\u201d Serafi says, \u201cis how differently each of them carries the same questions: Where do we come from? What do we carry with us? What does home even mean once it starts to change shape?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Al-Ahsa native Alfaraj contributes this 2016 work. \u201c(His) connection to Al-Ahsa, to land, to agriculture and inherited knowledge, grounds the presentation in something deeply personal to me,\u201d says Serafi. \u201cThere\u2019s a rootedness in his practice, literally and otherwise, that reminds me how much identity is tied to place, to soil, to what our hands and families have built over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ayman Yossri Daydban<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201879\u2019 from \u2018Maharem\u2019 series<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.maestronewsroom.com\/media\/30f6532d-717b-4366-9158-9c455299fcd9\/1792644470187-1feffb35b136e7d3.jpg\" alt=\"\u201879\u2019 from \u2018Maharem\u2019 series. (Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Jeddah-based Palestinian-Saudi conceptual artist contributes this piece from his series that features vintage Egyptian cinema posters or popular proverbs printed on tissue boxes \u2014 connecting them to sentimentality and shared memory. \u201cHe works with the residue of everyday life, found materials, inherited objects and turns them into something closer to memory than object,\u201d Serafi says. \u201cI\u2019ve always felt his pieces ask you to slow down and really look at what\u2019s been overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abdulrahman AlSoliman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Collection FIVE V14\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AlSoliman is one of the most significant figures in the Kingdom\u2019s modern-art movement, and, as such, \u201cbrings a historical weight to the booth, a reminder that these conversations about image and identity didn\u2019t begin with this generation, they\u2019ve been building for decades,\u201d says Serafi. Born in Al-Hasa in 1954, AlSoliman is an award-winning writer and artist who was the first president of the Saudi Society for Fine Arts. The work shown here is from 1991.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.maestronewsroom.com\/media\/30f6532d-717b-4366-9158-9c455299fcd9\/1792644471408-101d0b2f348fc24e.jpg\" Abdallah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Untitled\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Qatif-born artist contributes this piece, created this year. \u201cWorking with hand-crafted processes-painting, collage, ceramics, installation and photographic print blankets- the works unfold as a meditation on persistence,\u201d the gallery said of an earlier exhibition of similar works. \u201c(Her) practice often turns the domestic and the personal into something quietly political; these familiar objects made strange yet meaningful,\u201d says Serafi.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\"
