Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh has emerged as the strongest contender for the new Congress President’s post with all eyes on the proposed crucial meeting of Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
In the political corridors of Congress, the internal movements of nomination for the post of President of Digvijay Singh have intensified amid the continuing doubts over Gehlot’s candidature.
The sudden return of Digvijay Singh, who was present in the India Jodo Yatra in Kerala with Rahul Gandhi, is also being considered a sign of preparation for some new political steps.
Highly placed sources in the party confirmed the meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Ashok Gehlot did not resolve the crisis in Rajasthan, Digvijay Singh is part of the party’s alternative plan for the post of Congress President.
The preparations for the paper process for the nomination of Diggi Raja, one of the trusted leaders of the party leadership, have also started. It is understood that Digvijay Singh can use the nomination form Pawan Bansal had received from the party’s Central Election Authority for the post of Congress President. Now only two days are left to file a nomination for the post of Congress President.
According to sources, due to the standoff between Gehlot and the Congress high command in Rajasthan, the leadership has made its alternative plan to field Digvijay Singh as the candidate. Therefore, now all eyes within the party are on the meeting of Gehlot and Sonia Gandhi, which is now likely to take place on Thursday.
According to indications, the picture of Digvijay’s nomination will be clear after the proposed talks between Gehlot and Sonia Gandhi. By the way, Gehlot is yet to get time from 10 Janpath and hence he is waiting to leave Jaipur from Delhi till the writing of the news on Wednesday.
The indication of this attitude of the high command is that Gehlot’s claim for the post of Congress President is now weakening and Digvijay Singh is on the way to becoming the alternate candidate of the high command.
Former Madhya Pradesh CM Diggi Raja has also been quite vocal against the BJP-RSS from an ideological point of view and has been in close harmony with the current top leadership of the Congress.
This can be gauged from the fact that two and a half years ago in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress government in the state fell due to the rebellion of Jyotiraditya Scindia, but the high command remained with Digvijay Singh and Kamal Nath.
Digvijay Singh, who was the party’s general secretary for a long time during Sonia Gandhi’s tenure, not only has good equations with former Congress President Rahul Gandhi but is also very close.
Digvijay Singh is also leading the entire preparation and operation of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started for the political renaissance of the Congress, as the chairman of the organizing committee of the Yatra.
Diggi Raja, who suddenly returned to Delhi from the Bharat Jodo Yatra, himself has maintained a strategic silence on his preparations for the nomination for the post of Congress President, but there is a discussion in the political corridors of the party that he will file the nomination after the conclusions of the Sonia-Gehlot meeting.
Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor has already announced his candidature for the post of Congress President and will file his nomination on September 30.
