Bernardo Arevalo has won the presidential election in Guatemala, with 59.1% of the votes counted by Sunday. Arevalo, a former diplomat, defeated Sandra Torres, who received 36.1% of the vote.

The Progressive Muvimento Semilla party candidate, Arevalo, has been praised by the people for his victory. President Alejandro Giammattei congratulated Arevalo on his victory, stating that he has given the order to start the process of change of power.

Arevalo was trailing Torres in the first round of vote counting, but Álvaro took the lead later. The Electoral Tribunal reported that 24% of voters’ votes were invalidated and 40% did not exercise their right to vote.
