Lebanon’s army says its troops have begun deploying to a “pilot zone” in the south of the country following the withdrawal of Israeli forces under a US-brokered agreement reached last month.

A statement from the army command said units had entered the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh in Nabatieh district on Tuesday morning.

On Monday night, Israel’s military confirmed the start of the pilot zone plan, which should see Israeli troops pulling out of a small part of the territory occupied during their conflict with Hezbollah as well as the disarmament of the Iran-backed group.

It comes ahead of a meeting in Washington between US President Donald Trump and his Lebanese counterpart, Joseph Aoun.

Aoun is expected to urge Trump to put pressure on Israel to withdraw from the rest of southern Lebanon and to provide support to the Lebanese army to take full control of areas where Hezbollah holds sway.

The US state department announced on Monday afternoon that “pilot zone operations” had begun in Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh and two other Lebanese villages, Froun and Srifa, in line with the Trilateral Framework agreement between Israel, Lebanon and the US.

It said the “milestone” was the direct result of discussions last week between Israeli and Lebanese representatives in Rome.

Later on Monday, an Israeli military official confirmed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would “adjust its force posture in one of the pilot areas” to allow the Lebanese army to carry out its mission, while also “safeguarding the security of IDF soldiers and preserving its right to self-defence and to remove threats”.

“The objective of the pilot and the agreement is the disarmament of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation and the removal of its illegal weapons,” the official said.

They also reiterated that the IDF would remain in the “security zone” – the 10km (six-mile) deep strip of occupied Lebanese territory running along the border – for “as long as necessary” to defend northern Israeli communities.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese army’s command said its units had begun deploying to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh “based on ongoing communications with the Military Co-ordination Group for Lebanon”, referring to the trilateral body created to support implementation of the framework.

The statement also called on Lebanese citizens “not to head to the village until the security situation stabilises, and to comply with the instructions of the deployed military units for their own safety”.

The Lebanese army said its troops were already carrying out missions in nearby Froun and Srifa following Monday’s US announcement.

An Israeli source also told the Haaretz newspaper that there were no Israeli troops in those villages.

Lebanon was drawn into the war between Israel, the US and Iran on 2 March, when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel in retaliation for a strike that killed Iran’s supreme leader.

Israel responded by launching a bombing campaign across Lebanon and invading a significant part of the country’s south.

More than 4,300 people have been killed in Lebanon, including almost 800 children, women and medics, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Israeli authorities say 37 Israeli soldiers and four civilians have been killed on both sides of the border during the conflict.

For decades, the F-35 had been regarded as one of the most survivable combat aircraft ever built, and reports that Iran may have successfully tracked and engaged the stealth jet raised uncomfortable questions about the future of air warfare.

Yet in recent weeks, another incident has begun to dominate discussions inside the U.S. defense establishment: the reported testimony of an F-15 fighter pilot who was shot down over Iran on April 3.

According to a CNN report citing multiple sources familiar with classified briefings, the pilot described witnessing an unusual aerial phenomenon moments before ejecting from his aircraft. “Multiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs,” one source familiar with the pilot’s account reportedly told CNN. Another source characterized the pilot’s description as resembling a “minefield of drones” suspended in the air.

Until now, Tehran’s drone strategy has largely relied on mass production of low-cost, expendable systems designed to overwhelm defenses through sheer numbers. Iranian-made Shahed drones, in particular, have become internationally known for their simplicity, affordability, and effectiveness.

The drones have been copied by several countries. Russia fields a variant known as the Geran, while the United States recently introduced its own low-cost system, the Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS), reportedly inspired by reverse-engineering concepts demonstrated by the Shahed family.

A transition from large numbers of inexpensive drones to coordinated, intelligent swarms would represent a qualitative leap rather than merely a quantitative one.

Some analysts caution against dismissing the possibility outright.

During the recent conflict, Iran repeatedly surprised Western intelligence agencies with capabilities that exceeded pre-war assessments.

Before hostilities began, many intelligence estimates assessed Iran’s longest-range ballistic missiles as having a maximum reach of roughly 2,000 kilometers.

However, Iran subsequently demonstrated the ability to strike targets at significantly greater distances, including attacks against facilities associated with U.S. and allied operations in the Indian Ocean.

Iran also unveiled increasingly sophisticated missile technologies, including highly maneuverable systems capable of making abrupt trajectory changes during the terminal phase of flight.

Additionally, Iranian forces employed large-scale drone and missile strikes featuring cluster munition payloads that dispersed submunitions across extensive areas. These attacks reportedly targeted airfields, radar installations, and military infrastructure.

Most significantly, Iran appears to have challenged assumptions regarding Western air superiority by demonstrating an ability to track advanced aircraft, including stealth platforms.

These developments have led some analysts to argue that Western assessments may have underestimated the pace of Iran’s technological progress.

Despite the attention generated by the pilot’s account, many experts remain skeptical that the reported formation necessarily indicates the existence of a sophisticated autonomous drone swarm.

Several alternative explanations are being considered.

One possibility is that Iran established what military planners sometimes describe as a drone barrier or drone screen along known flight paths used by American aircraft.

Throughout the conflict, U.S. fighters reportedly conducted limited low-altitude incursions intended to minimize exposure to Iranian surface-to-air missile systems. Over time, Iranian forces may have identified recurring routes and positioned loitering drones along those corridors.

Under such a scenario, dozens of drones could be deployed in relatively close proximity without necessarily being interconnected.

If multiple systems were operating simultaneously within a designated area, they could create the appearance of a swarm without requiring advanced networking technology.

Another possibility is that the pilot may have observed friendly or allied drones conducting surveillance missions rather than Iranian systems.

Israeli intelligence and reconnaissance drones have been active throughout the conflict, often operating in coordinated formations designed to locate and suppress enemy air defenses.

Under combat conditions, distinguishing between friendly, hostile, and neutral aerial systems can be exceptionally difficult.

The United States Navy and Marine Corps are confronting a growing challenge that military leaders increasingly view as a long-term threat to aviation readiness: retaining qualified pilots. While the naval services continue to operate one of the largest military aviation forces in the world, mounting pilot shortages and increasing operational demands have created concerns about a self-reinforcing cycle that could further weaken retention rates in the years ahead.

Despite ongoing recruiting and training efforts, the Department of the Navy is estimated to have approximately 9,800 qualified pilots, including around 6,300 Navy aviators and roughly 3,500 Marine Corps pilots. That figure alone is remarkable. Combined, the Navy and Marine Corps likely maintain a pilot force roughly comparable in size to the estimated pilot inventories of the Russian and Chinese air forces combined.

A shortage of experienced aviators places greater demands on those who remain in service. Increased workloads, longer deployments, and additional responsibilities can encourage more pilots to leave for civilian careers, creating an even larger shortage. The Navy and Marine Corps are now attempting to prevent that cycle from accelerating through expanded retention bonuses and other incentive programs aimed at convincing aviators to extend their military careers.

One of the fundamental challenges facing military aviation is that pilots are paid according to a standardized officer compensation system rather than a profession-specific salary structure.

Pilots serving in the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard receive base pay based primarily on rank and years of service. This model mirrors compensation systems used by many Western militaries, including the Royal Air Force.

As a result, a fighter pilot flying advanced aircraft such as the F-35 receives the same base pay as any other officer of identical rank and service length, regardless of occupational specialty.

In both the Navy and Air Force, fighter pilots must be commissioned officers. The primary exception within the U.S. military is the Army, where many helicopter pilots serve as warrant officers rather than commissioned officers.

The uniform pay structure offers several advantages, including administrative simplicity and consistency across the officer corps. However, it also creates limitations when military services compete with civilian employers for highly trained aviators.

Commercial airlines can significantly increase salaries to attract experienced pilots. The military has far less flexibility. Raising pilot base pay would generally require broader increases across the entire officer force, creating substantial budget implications throughout all service branches.

To compensate for these restrictions, Congress and military leaders increasingly rely on targeted aviation incentives.

Programs such as Aviation Incentive Pay, continuation pay programs, and specialized retention bonuses provide additional compensation to aviators who agree to remain in service beyond their initial obligations.

Total compensation comparisons between military and civilian pilots are often complicated. Military personnel receive extensive benefits beyond basic salary, including healthcare, housing allowances, subsistence allowances, retirement benefits, and various operational bonuses.

For Navy and Marine Corps aviators, compensation rises steadily with rank.

An O-1 Ensign in the Navy or Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps typically earns between $50,000 and $63,000 annually in base pay. When housing allowances, subsistence allowances, and other incentives are included, total compensation generally reaches between $80,000 and $105,000.

At the O-2 level, corresponding to Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy and First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, annual base pay rises to approximately $58,000 to $75,000, while total compensation typically reaches between $90,000 and $120,000.

The O-3 rank, Lieutenant in the Navy and Captain in the Marine Corps, is often viewed as the peak of a pilot’s operational flying career. These officers frequently conduct a large share of combat and tactical missions and generally possess between four and ten years of service. Their base pay ranges from roughly $70,000 to $105,000 annually, with total compensation reaching between $110,000 and $155,000.

More senior aviators continue to see increases in compensation. O-4 Major and Lieutenant Commander pilots typically earn between $95,000 and $125,000 in base pay, while total compensation can reach $175,000. O-5 officers receive total compensation packages ranging from approximately $160,000 to more than $210,000.

At the O-6 level, corresponding to Colonel in the Marine Corps and Captain in the Navy, aviators can earn between $180,000 and over $230,000 annually in total compensation. Although some officers above O-6 continue to fly, they rarely participate directly in combat aviation operations.

While military compensation remains competitive early in a pilot’s career, the gap widens significantly over time.

Entry-level Navy and Marine Corps pilots generally earn total compensation packages worth between $80,000 and $105,000 annually. Mid-career aviators with eight to twelve years of service often receive between $130,000 and $175,000.

These figures are broadly comparable to compensation offered by regional airlines.

However, the commercial aviation sector provides opportunities for substantially higher earnings as pilots gain seniority.

Many airline pilots begin flying regional aircraft before progressing to narrowbody jets and eventually widebody aircraft at major carriers. Senior captains employed by major airlines such as Delta, United, or American can earn total compensation packages ranging from approximately $350,000 to more than $550,000 annually.

For experienced military aviators facing family considerations and career planning decisions, those financial incentives can be difficult to ignore.

### Navy And Marines Often Earn More Than Air Force Counterparts

Although military officer base pay remains identical across services, Navy and Marine Corps aviators frequently receive higher total compensation than their Air Force counterparts.

The naval services routinely involve sea-duty assignments, carrier operations, and expeditionary deployments that generate additional pay incentives.

Marine aviation officers participating in certain operational assignments can receive particularly substantial bonus packages. In some specialized circumstances, total compensation for Marine aviators can reportedly approach $320,000 annually.

Even so, military leaders acknowledge that compensation alone cannot solve the retention challenge.

The services continue to refine retention programs in an effort to remain competitive.

In April 2026, the Air Force announced significant revisions to its fiscal year 2026 Aviation Bonus Program. The service increased compensation for shorter contract commitments, particularly among fighter, bomber, and U-2 pilot communities.

The revised program offers contracts ranging from three to twelve years, with annual bonus rates reaching as high as $50,000 depending on aircraft type, experience level, and career field.

According to reporting by Air & Space Forces Magazine, some aviators could potentially receive cumulative bonus packages approaching $600,000 over the life of their agreements. Earlier retention programs offered bonuses ranging from approximately $105,000 to $420,000 depending on commitment length and specialty.

The Navy operates similar retention initiatives.

Its Aviation Department Head Retention Bonus Program targets officers transitioning into critical leadership positions, particularly at the O-4 level. Incentives vary significantly by aviation community, with tactical jet, F-35, and helicopter pilots often receiving the largest offers.

Within the tactical aviation community, pilots signing 96-month agreements may qualify for retention bonuses totaling $300,000.

Despite increasingly generous financial incentives, many aviators cite quality-of-life concerns as a primary factor influencing career decisions.

In January 2024, Commander Kristen Hansen, commanding officer of VFA-122, highlighted the growing burden placed on naval aviators.

“They ask for more every year with fewer and fewer people,” Hansen told Peninsula Press.

She emphasized the challenges faced by military families after years of repeated deployments and operational demands.

“After you’ve given a decade plus to the Navy, at some point, you and your family have to come first too,” Hansen said. “You can totally say ‘for God & Country,’ but that goes only so far when you have people at home that are constantly having to watch you go away.”

Such concerns have become increasingly relevant as deployments lengthen and operational tempo remains high.

The recent deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford illustrates the pressures confronting naval aviation personnel.

The carrier returned to Naval Station Norfolk in May 2026 after completing a 326-day deployment, reportedly the longest continuous U.S. carrier deployment since the Vietnam War.

During that period, the carrier’s air wing conducted more than 12,200 launches and recoveries. The deployment included multiple mission extensions, ranging from operations in the Caribbean to missions in the Middle East.

While military leaders praised the performance of sailors and aviators, such lengthy deployments impose significant personal and family costs.

For many pilots evaluating whether to remain in uniform, additional bonuses may not fully offset the desire for greater stability and family time.

Even with ongoing retention challenges, the United States remains unmatched in military aviation capacity.

The U.S. Air Force is estimated to maintain approximately 13,000 qualified pilots. Historical figures released by the service in 2006 documented nearly 13,700 pilots, alongside thousands of navigators and air battle managers.

The Army is widely believed to operate one of the world’s largest helicopter pilot communities, with estimates ranging from roughly 7,300 active-duty pilots to as many as 14,000 across the broader force.

Collectively, the United States fields far more military aviators than any other nation.

China and Russia are each believed to maintain approximately 4,000 to 5,000 air force pilots. The Indian Air Force reported 3,834 pilots in 2021, while the Royal Air Force operates with roughly 1,500 pilots.

The disparity is even more pronounced in naval aviation. The Navy and Marine Corps together operate more than 1,100 carrier-capable fighter aircraft, dwarfing the carrier aviation fleets of most competitors.

Yet numbers alone cannot guarantee readiness. The challenge facing naval aviation today is not merely training new pilots but convincing experienced ones to stay. Whether retention bonuses, expanded incentives, and quality-of-life improvements can reverse the trend may ultimately determine how effectively the Navy and Marine Corps sustain the world’s largest and most capable carrier aviation force in the years ahead.

Dramatic videos circulating on social media show the aircraft entering a sudden free-fall before crashing near the Dubai Air Show venue and erupting into a fireball. Eyewitnesses reported that the jet appeared to lose power mid-maneuver, leading to speculation of a possible engine failure.

The IAF confirmed the accident, announcing that the pilot sustained fatal injuries. “An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today,” the statement said. “The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

Footage suggests the pilot may have attempted to steer the aircraft away from populated areas instead of ejecting, an act that aviation analysts say could indicate a last-minute effort to avoid civilian casualties. The IAF has not yet commented on whether the pilot attempted or was able to eject.

The crash is a significant blow to India’s military aviation community. The LCA Tejas programme, spanning more than four decades, symbolizes India’s ambition to design and produce a modern fighter jet capable of replacing aging Soviet-era fleets and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. A great deal was riding on Tejas’s performance at the Dubai Air Show, a premier global defence event where India had been showcasing the aircraft as a competitive export option.

This is only the second known major crash involving the Tejas since its first flight in 2001. The previous incident occurred in March 2024, when a Tejas crashed in Rajasthan after returning from the tri-services “Bharat Shakti” exercise. The aircraft’s overall safety record has been viewed positively, particularly considering its long development cycle and gradual induction into the IAF.

The Tejas, developed by the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and powered by the American GE F404-IN20 engine, has been a centrepiece of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing drive. India began conceptualizing the Light Combat Aircraft programme in the early 1980s. DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) was tasked with building an indigenous engine—the GTX-37 and later the Kaveri—but persistent technological hurdles meant the Kaveri engine never met requirements, producing only 70.4 kN of thrust against the targeted 81 kN. Consequently, India redesigned the fighter around the GE F404 engine, a decision that ultimately allowed the programme to move forward.

Following the aircraft’s maiden flight in 2001—piloted by then-Wing Commander Rajiv Kothiyal—Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee named the fighter “Tejas,” meaning “radiance” in Sanskrit.

The IAF placed its first orders for the Mk1 variant in 2006 and 2010, and as of August 2025, two Tejas Mk1 squadrons—No. 45 “Flying Daggers” and No. 18 “Flying Bullets”—are operational at Sulur Air Force Station. India has received 38 of the 40 Mk1 aircraft ordered, with the remaining two being trainer variants.

In 2021, India approved a major procurement of 83 Tejas Mk1A aircraft, valued at Rs 48,000 crore, followed by a record-breaking deal in September 2025 to purchase 97 additional Mk1A jets worth US$7.5 billion. In total, India has now ordered 220 Tejas aircraft, marking the single largest fighter jet acquisition in the country’s history.

Engine supply, however, has been a significant bottleneck. HAL ordered 99 GE-F404 engines in 2021, but delays pushed back the delivery schedule for the Mk1A variant. So far, India has received only four engines, with 12 expected by March 2026. To meet growing production demands, HAL has added a third production line in Nashik and is planning a fourth to raise annual output from 24 to 32 aircraft.

In November, India signed another major deal worth USD 1 billion with GE to supply 113 additional F404 engines, with deliveries starting in 2027—ensuring engine availability for the expanding Mk1A fleet. India is also developing the Tejas Mk2, a more powerful medium-weight fighter expected to form the backbone of the IAF in the 2030s. Projections suggest India could operate over 300 Tejas aircraft by 2035.

The Tejas has increasingly been showcased on the international stage. It participated in its first overseas exercise in the UK in 2022 and later took part in Exercise Desert Flag in the UAE in 2023. Its airshow debut came earlier, at the Bahrain International Airshow in 2016. During India’s Tarang Shakti 2024 exercise, the Tejas impressed foreign observers by simulating a successful interception of a Eurofighter Typhoon.

India has been actively marketing the Tejas abroad, with reports emerging that Brazil has shown interest in the fighter jet. The aircraft’s presence at the Dubai Air Show was part of a broader push to secure export orders.

However, the crash is likely to cast a shadow over India’s export campaign. Defence analysts say countries evaluating the Tejas will closely watch the results of the IAF’s court of inquiry, particularly given the possibility of an engine-related failure.

For India, the tragedy represents not just the loss of a pilot and aircraft, but also a painful moment for an ambitious indigenous programme that has become a symbol of the country’s technological aspirations. As investigations proceed, the focus will be on determining what went wrong—and how India can ensure the future safety and credibility of its homegrown fighter jet.

A pilot has died after an Indian fighter jet crashed while performing a display at an airshow in Dubai, officials have said.

The Indian Air Force said in a statement: “IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.

“A court of inquiry is being constituted, to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltds Tejas jet crashed about about 14:10 local time (10:10 GMT), according to the Associated Press.

Dubai’s Media Office and the UAE Ministry of Defence have said firefighters and emergency services have “responded rapidly” to the incident and are managing the situation on-site.

The Dubai Airshow 2025 website says the event has attracted more than 148,000 attendees and exhibitors from 1,500 companies.

The fatal crash happened on the last day of the airshow, which began on Monday.

A Polish Air Force pilot has been killed after his F-16 fighter jet crashed during preparations for one of Europe’s largest military air shows, shattering plans for the high-profile event and sending shockwaves through Poland’s armed forces and its NATO allies.

The incident occurred Thursday evening at Radom Airport in central Poland, where crews had been rehearsing for the Radom International Air Show, scheduled for the weekend. At approximately 19:30 local time (17:30 GMT), the pilot’s aircraft — part of Poland’s elite “Tiger Demo” unit — failed to recover after a steep maneuver and plummeted nose-first into the ground. The jet erupted in flames on impact. Emergency crews were on the scene within minutes, but the pilot could not be saved.

The General Command of the Armed Forces confirmed that the pilot, whose identity has not yet been released, was stationed at the 31st Tactical Air Base in Poznań. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who rushed to the crash site, issued a solemn tribute.

“A Polish Army pilot died in the crash of an F-16 aircraft – an officer who always served his country with dedication and great courage. I pay tribute to his memory,” he wrote on X.

Kosiniak-Kamysz stood alongside military officials at Radom Airport late into the night as investigators began combing through the wreckage. “The entire Polish nation grieves tonight,” he told reporters. “This tragedy reminds us of the cost of service and the risks borne by our pilots every day.”

Despite this modernization, Poland’s reliance on the F-16 remains significant. The jets routinely participate in NATO drills and multinational operations, including air patrols over the Baltic Sea and missions reinforcing Poland’s eastern flank. Thursday’s crash will likely trigger a review of both the operational safety of Poland’s current fleet and the training protocols for its pilots.

The fallen pilot was part of the “Tiger Demo Team,” Poland’s flagship F-16 demonstration unit known across Europe for precision aerobatics at NATO events. Established in 2005, the squadron often represents Poland in multinational air festivals, performing complex maneuvers that showcase both the capabilities of the F-16 and the skill of its pilots.

This sudden deployment of America’s most advanced air superiority fighters comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with President Donald Trump reportedly weighing the possibility of direct U.S. military involvement alongside Israel.

So far, the United States has refrained from offensive operations in the war, issuing instead a stark two-week ultimatum to Tehran, urging de-escalation or face “serious consequences.” But the arrival of the F-22 Raptors in Europe signals a potential shift in America’s posture—and underscores the strategic importance of airpower as the situation unfolds.

This move, although officially framed as a “preemptive deterrent,” also serves as a chilling reminder of the unmatched capability that the F-22 brings to the skies—and the psychological impact it delivers to any adversary.

The F-22s landing at RAF Lakenheath, home to the U.S. 48th Fighter Wing, is more than a logistical decision—it is a message.

For decades, the F-22 Raptor has been a symbol of U.S. air dominance. With a combination of stealth, speed, agility, and advanced avionics, the aircraft is tailor-made to establish air superiority—especially in contested airspace. Its presence near the European theater, as Israel intensifies operations against Iranian military sites and nuclear facilities, underscores a readiness to pivot to offensive roles if diplomacy fails.

President Trump, during a recent press briefing, was characteristically blunt: “The Ayatollahs must understand—we won’t wait forever. America’s patience has limits, and our Raptors don’t need visas to fly where they’re needed.”

The Iran-Israel conflict ignited in early June following a devastating Israeli airstrike on an alleged Iranian weapons shipment near Damascus, Syria. The strike reportedly killed several senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials, prompting Iran to launch retaliatory ballistic missiles targeting Israeli airbases and military installations. The tit-for-tat exchange has since spiraled into full-blown hostilities, drawing in regional militias including Hezbollah and the Houthis.

While Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense systems have performed admirably, the nation remains vulnerable to saturation attacks from Iranian drones and cruise missiles—a tactic Tehran has honed using proxy groups across the region.

America’s involvement, so far, has been limited to logistical and intelligence support. But with regional dynamics shifting fast, and oil prices surging amid fears of a broader conflict, Washington is under growing pressure to take decisive action.

The deployment of the F-22 is significant not only for its immediate tactical impact but also for the reputation it brings with it—particularly among Iranian commanders who remember a chilling encounter from over a decade ago.

In 2013, a now-legendary incident occurred that sent shockwaves through the Iranian Air Force and demonstrated the stealth and power of the F-22 in a live scenario.

An American MQ-1 Predator drone was flying a surveillance mission just outside Iranian airspace when two Iranian F-4 Phantom fighters—Cold War-era jets inherited from the U.S. before the 1979 revolution—were scrambled to intercept it. What the Iranian pilots didn’t know was that an F-22 Raptor was silently escorting the drone, lying in wait.

As the F-4s closed in, the Raptor pilot did something astonishing.

“He flew under their aircraft to check out their weapons load without them knowing he was there,” General Mark Welsh, then Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, revealed months later. “Then he pulled up on their left wing and radioed them: ‘You really ought to go home.’”

The stunned Iranian pilots disengaged immediately.

This Top Gun-style maneuver, later confirmed by the Pentagon, highlighted the Raptor’s near-invisible radar signature and incredible maneuverability. It also marked an unofficial combat debut for the F-22, years before its official operational use in Syria against ISIS in 2014.

The 2013 encounter wasn’t the first time Iran tried to shoot down a U.S. drone. A year prior, Sukhoi Su-25s operated by Iran’s IRGC had attempted to fire on another MQ-1 Predator. After that incident, the Pentagon implemented a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): high-value drones would no longer fly alone.

Since then, F-22 Raptors or F/A-18 Hornets from aircraft carriers like the USS John C. Stennis began regularly escorting reconnaissance drones, ensuring they wouldn’t be sitting ducks in hostile skies.

This layered defense strategy not only protected valuable surveillance assets but also served as a tripwire—any attack on these drones could potentially invoke swift and devastating retaliation.

So what makes the F-22 Raptor so unique, even a decade after its production ended?

Firstly, the aircraft’s stealth design drastically reduces its radar cross-section (RCS). Radar-absorbent materials, precise angular shaping, and advanced coatings make it nearly invisible to conventional radar.

Secondly, the Raptor boasts supercruise capabilities—able to fly at supersonic speeds without using afterburners. This reduces infrared signatures, making it harder to track and target.

Its thrust vectoring nozzles give it unrivaled agility, capable of executing maneuvers that no fourth-generation jet can match. In a close-range dogfight, it’s a ghost with a killer instinct.

Advanced avionics allow the F-22 to detect and track multiple targets simultaneously. Its sensor fusion system offers unparalleled situational awareness—essential in complex, multi-threat environments like the current Middle East warzone.

As the war against Iran intensifies, the F-22’s mission profile is adapting.

In early August 2024, the Pentagon deployed a carrier strike group, additional warships, and a Raptor squadron to the Middle East following fears that Iran’s allies—Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi rebels—were planning retaliatory attacks against Israel.

Lt. Col. James Johnson, an F-22 squadron commander, explained the evolving role of the aircraft in a recent interview with Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“We were not necessarily worried about shooting down anybody else’s airplanes,” Johnson said. “We were primarily there to defend our ground forces against threats posed by UAVs and cruise missiles.”

This marked a significant shift: while the F-22 was built to counter elite enemy fighters like the Su-35 or J-20, its current role focuses on intercepting small, slow, and hard-to-detect threats such as loitering munitions and kamikaze drones—many of them Iranian-made.

The psychological edge that the F-22 gives the U.S. cannot be overstated. For Iranian pilots, many of whom fly outdated aircraft like the F-4 or MiG-29, the Raptor represents an opponent they can’t see, can’t outrun, and almost certainly can’t outgun.

Military analysts believe the deployment is as much about deterrence as it is about preparation.

“The F-22 isn’t just a jet—it’s a message,” says Dr. Elias Navari, a defense strategist at the Center for Security Studies in Geneva. “Its presence in a theater tells adversaries that the U.S. is prepared to control the skies if needed. That alone can change calculations on the ground.”

As the two-week ultimatum issued by Washington ticks down, all eyes are on Tehran. So far, Iran has not signaled any willingness to de-escalate. Instead, rhetoric from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has grown more defiant, vowing to avenge the deaths of IRGC generals and threatening to “ignite the skies” over Israel.

In response, the U.S. has begun fortifying its bases in the Gulf, activating Patriot missile batteries, and increasing aerial surveillance.

The F-22 Raptors now stationed in the UK may not stay there long. If the diplomatic window closes and war widens, they could soon be redeployed to forward bases like Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE or Incirlik in Turkey—within striking distance of Iranian targets.

The arrival of the F-22 Raptors in England is a turning point. With the world teetering on the brink of another major conflict, their presence represents both a threat and a promise: a threat to those who challenge U.S. dominance in the air, and a promise to allies that America still maintains an unmatched edge in airpower.

Swedish authorities have charged a convicted terrorist over the 2015 killing of a Jordanian pilot who was burned to death in Syria.

Osama Krayem, 32 – a Swedish citizen – was on Tuesday charged with war and terrorism crimes relating to the death of Moaz al-Kasasbeh.

Krayem is currently in prison after being convicted for his role in the 2015 and 2016 terror attacks in Paris and Brussels respectively.

The BBC has contacted his lawyer for comment relating to the latest allegations. He has previously denied the charges, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported.

Krayem’s trial is expected to begin on 4 June.

“It is painful for my parents to be confronted with this event again, but we are grateful that the Swedish authorities want to give us justice,” the pilot’s brother, Jawdat al-Kasasbeh, told Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Radio following the announcement of the charges.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority last week announced they planned to charge a man with the “execution” of Lt Kasasbeh, along with other suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) group.

Jordan confirmed the death of Lt Kasasbeh in 2015, following the circulation of a gruesome video published online by IS that appeared to show the 26-year-old being burned alive in a cage.

He was captured when his plane came down near the city of Raqqa during a mission against IS in December 2014.

At the time of Lt Kasasbeh’s death, Jordan – which was part of a US-led coalition fighting IS in Syria during the civil war – had been attempting to secure his release as part of a prisoner swap.

Swedish prosecutors said in its statement last week the offences Krayem has now been charged with took place between 24 December 2014 and 3 February 2015.

They added an investigation had shown Krayem “armed and masked, together with others forced the pilot into a metal cage”.

“The cage was subsequently set on fire by one of the co-perpetrators, and the pilot died as a consequence of the fire.”

Krayem is originally from the Swedish city of Malmo and is thought to have travelled to Syria in September 2014 to fight for IS.

In June 2022, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the November 2015 Paris terror attacks – in which 130 people were killed – and for planning a separate attack on Amsterdam airport.

A year later, he was also found guilty of terrorist murder for his role in the Brussels attacks that killed 32 people.

He has been temporarily transferred from France to Sweden in order to participate in this latest trial.

A Russian Su-35 fighter pilot has declared his readiness to confront the arrival of F-16 fighter jets in Ukraine. This announcement is part of an escalating preparation by the Russian Air Force, spurred by the imminent delivery of Western aircraft to bolster Ukraine’s defense. On July 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense released a video in which Alexander, a Su-35S fighter pilot, confidently declared that Russian flight crews had thoroughly studied the capabilities of the F-16, reported state-owned TASS news agency.

“Our flight crew is ready to meet the F-16 aircraft. I studied their strengths and weaknesses. The skill of the flight crew will allow us to complete the combat mission to defeat this aircraft [F-16],” Alexander asserted. He pointed out that the Su-35S was more advanced than the American fighter, with superior sighting capabilities and long-range missiles. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, aircraft crews have been patrolling the warzone around the clock in all weather conditions to defend the nation’s air borders from enemy attacks.
