At least 13 people have been killed and 66 injured after an explosion at Qatar’s largest gas facility.

The city’s main liquified natural gas (LNG) processing site suffered a “technical accident” in Ras Laffan industrial zone on Sunday night, the interior ministry said, with the city’s skyline turning orange because of the explosion.

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi said the explosion would not affect the country’s exports, adding “this was an accident and not sabotage or hostile in nature”.

The Ras Laffan Port is the largest artificial harbour in the world and has the world’s largest LNG export facility. It was targeted by Iranian strikes earlier this year.

The blast on Sunday rattled windows and was felt across central Doha, panicking residents more than 70km (43 miles) from Ras Laffan.

Sherida al-Kaabi added the government was working on determining the cause of the blast which occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility, he added there was no environmental risks.

However, the energy minister said it would be difficult to determine when operations would resume.

“Plant production was intentionally completely stopped since December 2025 due to urgent maintenance requirements, it was first restarted again only two days ago,” Sherida al-Kaabi said.

An investigation has begun into the cause of the accident and Sherida al-Kaabi confirmed those killed from the blast were all from India and Pakistan.

The Embassy of India in Doha said it was in constant touch with the Qatari authorities and will render all help to the families of those who lost their lives or have been injured.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the families of those who have unfortunately passed away in the sad incident at Ras Laffan Industrial City last night,” the embassy said in a post on X.

On Sunday, QatarEnergy, which is the country’s state-owned energy company, confirmed the explosion occurred at “Barzan local gas supply facility in the evening hours of Sunday 21 June”.

“Emergency response teams were deployed immediately to contain the fire, which is now under control.”

The blast occurred as workers were restarting operations that were previously halted in March.

During the US-Israel war with Iran, the Ras Laffan Port suffered “extensive damage” from retaliatory strikes as Qatar is a major supplier of global energy.

QatarEnergy said the required repairs to the facility would reduce output by 12.8m tons of LNG for three to five years.

Qatar had halted production in response to the conflict, pausing a fifth of the world’s LNG. Shipments had begun to resume recently.

An explosion has killed at least eight people and injured 18 others during Friday prayers inside a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs, the health ministry has said.

Pictures from Syria’s state-run news agency, Sana, show the inside of the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque with black, scorched walls, smashed windows and blood on the carpet.

Officials believe that an explosive was detonated inside the building, Sana reports, citing a security source. While authorities are still searching for the perpetrators, jihadist group Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah has claimed responsibility.

The mosque is in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighbourhood, where most people are part of the Alawite ethnoreligious group.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the “terrorist crime”, writing in a statement on X that the “cowardly act is a blatant assault on human and moral values” designed to “undermine the security and stability” of the country.

Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah, a Sunni extremist group, has said it carried out the attack in collaboration with another unidentified group, using explosives planted at the site.

The group’s vague origins and opaque affiliations, which came to prominence in June when it claimed responsibility for a deadly church bombing in Damascus, have raised questions about its true links and authenticity.

Some observers have speculated that it could be a front for Islamic State group (IS) given the similarity in their messaging and type of targets.

The latest claim follows a months-long lull in Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah’s claimed attacks, which have largely taken the form of alleged targeted killings of minorities and what the group describes as “remnants” of the former Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad.

The blast comes a year after Syrian rebel forces overthrew Assad, who is Alawite. The sect is an offshoot of Shia Islam whose members make up one of the country’s biggest religious minorities.

Since then, Syria has seen several waves of sectarian violence, with Alawites fearing reprisals and being subject to crackdowns. Assad fled to Russia, an ally of his regime, where he and his family have been given asylum.

In March, security forces were accused of killing dozens of Alawites in the coastal province of Latakia, war monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

Video footage shows a fireball rising above Lebanon’s capital overnight following another strike on the city.

Reports suggest it may have hit a petrol station, according to a map provided by the Israeli military.

The blast came after Israel’s military warned people in a southern suburb to evacuate.

A BBC reporter on the ground heard six blasts and drones buzzing overhead.

The explosion follows further Israeli strikes in the city and Hezbollah has also fired dozens of rockets into northern Israel on Saturday.

Fires raged across the Yemeni city of Hudaydah following a series of strikes by the Israeli Air Force on Sunday.

Video shared on social media showed a huge explosion at the city’s port, while footage recorded by Houthi-controlled Al Masirah TV captured fires blazing at the Al-Hali power station.

The Israeli Air Force targeted power plants and a seaport “which were used by the Houthis to transfer Iranian weapons to the region”, the Israeli Defense Forces said in a statement posted on X.

The strikes came a day after Houthis launched a missile attack on Israel’s Ben Gurion airport, close to Tel Aviv, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was arriving.

The Houthis are an an Iranian-backed rebel group based in Yemen, and considers Israel an enemy.

Citing the head of Iran’s Red Crescent, state TV said earlier on Sunday that 24 people were missing.

According to Reuters news agency, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed condolences to the victims’ families.

“I spoke with ministers and we will do our best to follow up,” Pezeshkian said in televised comments.

The Tabas mine covers an area of more than 30,000 square kilometres (nearly 11,600 square miles) and holds mass reserves of coking and thermal coal, according to IRNA.

It is “considered the richest and largest coal area in Iran,” IRNA said.

Local prosecutor Ali Nesaei was quoted by state media as saying “gas accumulation in the mine” has made search operations difficult.

“Currently, the priority is to provide aid to the injured and pull people from under the rubble,” Nesaei said.

He added that “the negligence and fault of the relevant agents will be dealt with” at a later date.

Last year, an explosion at a coal mine in the northern city of Damghan killed six people, also likely the result of methane leak according to local media.

In May 2021, two miners died in a collapse at the same site, local media reported at the time.

A blast in 2017 killed 43 miners in Azad Shahr city in northern Iran, triggering anger towards Iranian authorities.

This video, shared on social media, appears to show the moment a pager explodes in a supermarket in Lebanon on Tuesday afternoon. It shows a small blast injuring one person who falls to the floor.

Thousands of people were injured and at least eight killed when pagers belonging to Hezbollah members exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon.

BBC Verify analysis of the video suggests it was uploaded after the blasts took place, and the date and time shown on the CCTV match reports of when the pagers exploded.

It has so far not been possible to verify the location of the video.
