Edward was one of the first children in England to be given the gene therapy Zolgensma through the NHS

A five-year-old boy who received the world’s most expensive drug as a baby has made “incredible progress” and can walk independently, his mother said.

Edward, from Colchester, has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) which means he lacks a protein vital for muscle development.

He was one of the first children in England to be given the gene therapy Zolgensma, which costs £1.79m for the one-off treatment, through the NHS in 2021.

Mother Megan said Edward was her “pride and joy” and he had achieved milestones she never thought possible.

Contributed Megan has long blonde wavy hair and is taking a selfie of herself and Edward, who is sitting on her lap. They are on a boat in the sunshine, with white hotels in the background along the coastline.Contributed

Edward is full of life and a real character, according to his mum

About 65 babies are born with SMA in England each year. It causes muscle weakness and affects movement and breathing, meaning most babies do not live past the age of two without intervention.

Megan said Edward had gone from being lethargic as a baby to a cheeky, playful boy, who was “full of life” and “a real character”.

He might need to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life, but she added: “It does not matter, as long as he is happy. We are so proud of him.”

Contributed Edward in a physiotherapy room, stood upright. He is wearing a body brace, a white vest, dark jogging bottoms and blue boots. An adult is sitting behind him.Contributed

Edward can now walk 20 to 30 steps independently

“Edward had to have a double hip replacement in October and he’s only just getting back on his feet, but in general he is doing so well.

“He is learning to swim, he can float on his own, which is really hard for children with SMA because they don’t have natural buoyancy.

“This summer, he jumped off a boat into the sea and he went on a jet ski. He’s a very sweet, loveable little guy.”

Edward has just started school, where he has made lots of friends, and “does everything an ordinary five-year-old boy does”.

“We just didn’t think that was possible. We didn’t know what quality of life he would have,” she said.

Various doctors and medical professionals visited him whenever he was in hospital, even when they were not treating him, because they were amazed by his progress, she added.

“They want to see first-hand what gene therapy has done for him.”

Megan holds baby Edward on her lap, in a hospital room.

Edward received the gene therapy four years ago and it has transformed his life

The family moved to London so Edward can have physiotherapy up to five times a week.

Ms Willis gave up her job in event management to care full-time for Edward.

It was not certain he would receive the drug on the NHS, so she started a fundraising campaign, and has used the money to pay for specialist physio and equipment, to which she credits his progress.

“We raised £170,000 over five years but that money has nearly gone. It’s been put to a lot of good use,” she said.

“It has saved us as a family, not having to worry about the money. We’re fundraising again now because all of the progress he has made has been due to private care.”

Edward has made huge progress due to the private physiotherapy the family has been able to fund via a fundraising page

Zolgensma is thought to be the most expensive drug in the world, though NHS England said it had negotiated an undisclosed discount on its £1.79m list price.

Edward, who was diagnosed at two months old, was receiving another drug called Spinraza, which involves regular spinal regular injections for life, compared to a one-off injection of Zolgensma.

Because it is such a new drug, long-term outcomes are not known, but Megan said she believed this generation of babies with SMA would be the first to reach adulthood.

Contributed Edward is wearing a green school uniform and standing against a wooden fence.Contributed

Edward started school this year and had made lots of friends, his mum said

Prof James Palmer, medical director for specialised commissioning at NHS England, said: “It is a huge pleasure to see the remarkable benefits that this innovative gene therapy has provided for Edward since he was treated four years ago.

“Edward is one of more than 150 children with SMA to benefit from this one-shot treatment which has had a huge impact on their lives, and I’m optimistic that many more conditions like SMA will also become treatable over the coming years as medical advances continue at pace.”

A 10-year-old Palestinian boy has been killed by Israeli forces in a village south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military says its soldiers opened fire on Thursday in response to “confrontations and rock-hurling” directed at them.

Residents of al-Rihiya say that Muhammad al-Hallaq and his friends had been playing football in a local schoolyard when they saw Israeli military vehicles and began to run.

“It’s normal, they were afraid and ran back towards the village,” the parent of another boy who was a witness told the BBC. “There was no threat, no provocation. Nothing.”

The parent says that a soldier “opened fire erratically” from the back of a car. Muhammad was shot in the pelvis and rushed by car to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Footage shared on social media shows a large crowd gathered around an ambulance as the body of Muhammad was driven back to his village in the dark. His parents kissed his face as he lay on a stretcher.

Later Muhammad’s body was carried off for burial.

In a video on Palestinian Maan news agency, his mother said that he had spent the day at school and had been showing off his new backpack before going out.

“He loved birds, and he told me he wanted to be a heart doctor, he used to say this all the time,” she said tearfully, adding that he always got ‘excellent’ in his school grades.

The Israeli army said: “IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers responded with fire toward the suspects in the rock-hurling. Hits were identified. No IDF injuries were reported, and the incident is under review.”

Israel’s Kan news website said that a preliminary investigation by the IDF battalion commander criticised the soldiers’ conduct. According to its report, the commander found “the shooting deviated from the rules of engagement, and there was improper use of weaponry, with an emphasis on crowd-control measures.”

“This is the second incident in the company in which shooting was carried out not in accordance with the rules of engagement,” the commander is quoted as saying.

The BBC asked the IDF about the Kan report, but it declined to comment.

Separately the army said on Thursday that it had killed a man in Qabatiya near Jenin in the north of the West Bank, saying he had thrown an explosive device at Israeli troops who were not hurt.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, identified the man as Mahdi Kmeil who was 20 and said that he had been shot dead during an Israeli military raid.

According to figures from the UN’s humanitarian office (OCHA), some 200 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the start of the year, including about 40 children.

Majid Shaghnobi arrives at Heathrow airport in London

Majid Shaghnobi can’t eat or speak like he used to. He can’t smile.

But with his injured mouth covered by a surgical mask, his eyes were beaming as he arrived at London’s Heathrow airport on a flight from Cairo, with his mother, brother and little sister.

“I’m happy to be in England and to get treatment,” the 15-year-old told me.

He was trying to get humanitarian aid in the Kuwaiti area of northern Gaza in February last year when an Israeli tank shell exploded nearby, shattering his jaw bone and injuring his leg.

“One of my friends helped me and took me to the hospital,” he says. “They thought I was dead. I had to move my hand to show them that I was alive.”

Doctors in Gaza saved his life and Majid spent months in hospital, breathing through a tracheostomy tube, before he was evacuated to Egypt in February this year – with Israel’s permission – for further medical treatment.

Now he’s in the UK for surgery at Great Ormond Street children’s hospital in London to restore the function of his face.

He is the first Gazan child to arrive in the UK for treatment for war injuries, almost two years into a conflict in which more than 50,000 children have reportedly been killed or injured, according to the UN children’s charity, Unicef.

Majid's injuries from the shell explosion

The tank shell explosion destroyed Majid’s jawbone

His arrival follows months of work by a group of volunteer medical professionals who came together in November 2023 to set up Project Pure Hope, which helps injured and sick Gazan children get to the UK for treatment. It is funded by private donations.

“The UK is home to some of the best paediatric facilities in the world, yet while countries like the US, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and many others have stepped up to help, the UK has yet to do the same,” Project Pure Hope says.

Majid’s arrival in the UK comes less than a week after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer promised to evacuate more badly injured children, although the government has released few details of the plan.

Majid’s medical team – all working for free – will include craniofacial, plastic and orthodontic surgeons, with hospital bills paid for by private donations.

“If we’re able to give him a face and a jaw which he can use then it won’t be completely normal, but hopefully he’ll be able to feed himself and speak, and his facial expressions will be better,” says lead surgeon Noor ul Owase Jeelani, a professor of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Great Ormond Street.

“Hopefully that’s going to make a big impact on how he lives and on his future.

“Our hope is that we will be able to help many more children like him in the coming months. It’s our collective moral responsibility.”

‘They thought I was dead’, Majid tells the BBC

Doctors from the hospital have previously treated patients from Ukraine, and last year helped separate co-joined twins in Israel.

Professor Jeelani is disappointed that it has taken so long for the first child from Gaza to be treated for war injuries in the UK.

“As a doctor and as a human, I don’t quite understand why it’s taken us over 20 months to get to this stage,” he says.

Project Pure Hope has identified 30 critically injured children in Gaza who it hopes to help bring to the UK. It says the government’s announcement is “vital and long-overdue”, but time is of the essence.

“Every day of delay risks the lives and futures of children who deserve a chance to live, to recover and to rebuild a life,” said Omar Din, its co-founder.

Ghena and Rama on a slide

Ghena (left) and Rama in a playground in the UK

In April, the group of volunteers secured visas for two girls -13-year-old Rama and five-year-old Ghena – with life-long medical conditions to also have privately funded operations in the UK.

They were brought to London after being evacuated to Egypt from Gaza, where – with the destruction of the healthcare system there – they weren’t receiving the treatment they needed.

Since I met them in early May, Rama has put on weight and Ghena, who was deeply traumatised and withdrawn, is noticeably more playful.

Ghena has had laser surgery to relieve the pressure in her left eye, which she was at risk of losing. And Rama has had exploratory surgery for a serious bowel condition.

Both girls are doing well, their mothers say.

But they are sick with worry – finding it hard to eat and sleep – about family members left behind in Gaza, who are now struggling to feed themselves.

“It’s better than Gaza here,” Rama tells me. “There are no bombs and no fear.”

But friends message her from Gaza, telling her that they haven’t found bread for 10 days and she says her older brother is sleeping on the street after first his home, and then his tent, were bombed.

“They’re hungry. So I don’t want to eat either. I feel like I’m still there with them,” Rama said.

UN-backed experts said this week there was mounting evidence that widespread starvation, malnutrition and disease is driving a rise in hunger-related deaths among the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza.

Majid, who suffered life-changing injuries while out trying to get food for his family, is also worried about his two brothers still in Gaza.

“I’m scared that they’ll die or something will happen to them,” he says. “I just want them to be safe.”

Adam al-Najjar, pictured with his cousin, is the only one of his siblings to have survived an Israeli strike on his family’s home

An 11-year-old Palestinian boy who survived an Israeli air strike in Gaza last month, which killed his father and nine siblings, is being evacuated to Italy for treatment.

Adam al-Najjar and his mother, Dr Alaa al-Najjar, were scheduled to fly to Milan in northern Italy on Wednesday evening, Italy’s foreign ministry said.

Alaa’s husband, Dr Hamdi al-Najjar, and nine of their children were killed after their home in the southern city of Khan Younis was struck on 23 May.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said at the time the incident was being reviewed. The BBC has contacted the IDF for an updated comment.

Footage posted online by Palestinian journalists Mohammad Salama and Hala Asfour on Wednesday showed the boy and his mother getting into a Red Crescent ambulance and waving goodbye as they made their way out of Gaza.

In an interview with Italian newspaper la Repubblica published ahead of their evacuation, Alaa said Adam’s condition was stable but “his left arm is in bad shape, the bones are fractured and the nerves are damaged”.

The mother and son, along with 17 other injured Palestinians, plus their relatives, were set to cross the border to the Israeli city of Eilat on Wednesday, where they would then be flown to various cities in Italy on chartered flights by the Italian Air Force, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The flight carrying Adam was due to land at Milan’s Linate airport, the statement said.

Including Wednesday’s mission, 150 Palestinian patients have been evacuated from Gaza to Italy for medical treatment, as well as more than 450 accompanying family members, the foreign ministry added.

Alaa’s husband, Hamdi, had just returned from dropping his wife at Nasser Hospital where they both worked when the deadly attack on their home took place in May.

Hamdi was taken to hospital with brain and internal injuries but died days later.

Adam was severely injured but survived the attack.

A British surgeon who treated him said Adam’s “left arm was just about hanging off, he was covered in fragment injuries and he had several substantial lacerations” when he arrived at the hospital.

Watch: Surgeon in Gaza recalls moment sole child survivor entered operating room

At the time, the IDF said in response to reports of the strike that “an aircraft struck several suspects identified by IDF forces as operating in a building near troops in the Khan Younis area, a dangerous combat zone that had been evacuated of civilians in advance for their protection. The claim of harm to uninvolved individuals is being reviewed.”

Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 54,981 people have been killed in Gaza during the war, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

When Amanda and Nick learnt their son had a life-limiting condition, they had no-one in the same situation to turn to.

Jack is only 11 months old but is one of only 16 children in the world with a genetic condition that is so rare it doesn’t have a name.

“We are going to outlive our child, and knowing that his brothers and his sister may one day have to say goodbye to him… I can’t even begin to explain how difficult that is to process each day,” said Amanda.

But the mum said finding a woman in Georgia, USA, whose daughter had the same condition as Jack had been an source of “strength” for them, but added it was “very bittersweet” because unfortunately her daughter did pass away.

A new online support group has been created to help gay and bisexual men across Wales.

Jake Devline-Reed, who appeared on BBC Three programme I Kissed a Boy, has teamed up with the mental health hub Helpu to launch it.

Jake, from Swansea, was bullied at school and said the group will be “really beneficial” for a lot of men providing a “safe space” to talk about their concerns.

It comes after recent ONS figures showed LGBT people are more at risk of self-harm and suicide than heterosexual people.

A Palestinian-American teenager has been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials say.

Omar Mohammed Saada Rabea, 14, was shot on the outskirts of Turmus Ayya on Sunday evening along with two other 14-year-old boys, one of whom was seriously wounded. The other suffered minor wounds.

The Israeli military said its troops opened fire at three “terrorists” who were throwing stones towards a highway and endangering civilians driving on it.

The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned what it called the latest in a “series of extrajudicial killings” by Israeli forces.

There was no immediate comment from the US, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to meet President Donald Trump on Monday to discuss the war in the Gaza Strip, Iran and US tariffs.

There has been a spike in violence in the West Bank since Hamas’s deadly attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the ensuing war in Gaza.

Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed as Israeli forces have intensified their search-and-arrest raids across the territory, saying they are trying to stem deadly Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the West Bank and Israel.

The mayor of Turmus Ayya said Omar Rabea was shot dead on Sunday near the entrance to the town, which is about 15km (9 miles) north-east of Ramallah and has a sizeable population of Palestinian-Americans.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said one of the two boys was shot in the lower abdomen and the other in the thigh.

AFP news agency cited one of the boys, whom it identified as Abdul Rahman Shehadeh, as saying he was shot by a soldier while collecting fruit.

The father of the third boy, Ayoub Asaad, said he was also a US citizen and that the ambulance transporting him to hospital was stopped by Israeli soldiers at a military checkpoint outside the town, according to AFP.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that during counter-terrorism activity in the Turmus Ayya area its soldiers “identified three terrorists who hurled rocks toward the highway, thus endangering civilians driving”.

The soldiers fired towards them, “eliminating one terrorist and hitting two additional terrorists”, it added.

The foreign ministry of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority denounced the “use of live fire against three children” by Israeli forces.

“Israel’s continued impunity as an illegal occupying power encourages it to commit further crimes,” it warned.

Last Thursday, the UN human rights chief said the situation in the West Bank was “extremely alarming”.

Volker Türk told the UN Security Council that Israeli operations in the north had killed hundreds of people, destroyed entire refugee camps and makeshift medical sites, and displaced more than 40,000 Palestinians.

In January, Israel launched a major operation called “Operation Iron Wall” against Palestinian armed groups in the northern West Bank, saying it aimed to “defeat terrorism”.

Türk said his office had verified that Israeli state and settler violence had killed at least 909 Palestinians across the West Bank since 7 October 2023, including 191 children and five people with disabilities. He warned that some of the killings might amount to extrajudicial and other unlawful killings.

Over the same period, 51 Israelis, including 15 women and four children, had been killed in Palestinian attacks or armed clashes in the West Bank and Israel, he said.

Israel has built about 160 settlements housing some 700,000 Jews since it occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.
